Computer Basics
What is Computer?
A computer is an electronic device that receives
input, stores or processes the input as per user
instructions and provides output in desired format.
Types of Computers
1] Super computers
Supper computers are used to process very large amounts
of information including processing information to predict
hurricanes, satellite images and navigation, and process
military war scenarios.
2] Mainframes
Mainframes are used by government and businesses to process
very large amounts of information.
3] Mini-Computers
Mini-Computers are similar to mainframes...they are used by
business and government to process large amounts of information.
4] Personal Computers
Personal Computers...also known as PC’s...are smaller
and less powerful than the others. They are used in homes,
school and small business.
5] Laptop
A laptop, also called a notebook computer or just notebook,
is a small, portable personal computer with a “clamshell" form
factor, having, typically, a thin LCD or LED computer screen
mounted on the inside of the upper lid of the “clamshell" and
an alphanumeric keyboard on the inside of the lower lid.
Network
A network is a group of computers that share information
and hardware.
The computers are connected together using copper phone
wires, fiber optic cables, or radio waves.
The internet is many networks around the world that are
all connected together to make 1 huge network.
Parts of Computer
 There are two basic parts that make up a computer...
1] Hardware 2] Software
Hardware
 Computer hardware includes the physical parts or
components of a computer.
• CPU(Central Processing Unit)
• Monitor
• Keyboard
• Mouse
• Disk drive
• Speakers
• Printer
Hardware
There are three categories of Hardware:
• Input Devices
• Output Devices
• Storage Devices
Input Devices
An input device is a piece of computer hardware equipment
used to provide data and control signals to computer.
For example…
• Keyboard
• Mouse
• Laser Scanner
• Bar Code Reader
• Scanner
• Joystick
Output Devices
An output device is any peripheral that receives data from
a computer, usually for display, projection, or physical
reproduction.
Storage Devices
A storage device is any computing hardware that is used for
storing, porting and extracting data files and objects.
It can hold and store information both temporarily and
permanently, and can be internal or external to a computer,
server or any similar computing device.
• Hard Disk
• Floppy Disk
• CD, DVD
• Flash Memory
Software
 Software is the programs and applications that tell the
computer what to do and how to look.
 Computer programmers write the codes/instructions that
make-up software applications/programs.
 There are two types of software:
• Application Software
• Operating System Software
Application Software
An application software is computer software designed to
perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks or activities
for the benefit of the user.
Examples of an application include a word processor, spread
sheet an accounting application, a web browser, a media
player, a photo editor.
Operating System Software
Directs all the activities and sets all the rules for how
the hardware and software will work together.
 For Example…
• Windows
• Linux
• DOS
• Unix
• Vista
