- 3. INTRODUCTION Computer is the finest and most important gift of science and technology to the humans. It has done miracles in almost all the fields. In the field of education too; these are being used for managing its affairs including the actual teaching. In recent year there has been a groundswell of interest in how computers and the internet can best be harnessed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of education at all levels and in both formal and non-formal settings.

The use of computers and software to manage the instructional process. CMI is the answer to educations difficulties with individualization. Computer-managed instruction is an instructional strategy whereby the computer is used to provide learning objectives, learning resources and assessment of learner performance. Computer-managed instruction (CMI) aids the instructor in instructional management without actually doing the teaching. Meaning and concept of CMI The term CMI simply stands for the instruction managed with the help of computer technology. The CMI is the label for a broad category of computer based too applications designed to assist the teachers or school administration in the management of the instructional process most effectively. Good instructional management decisions are based on accurate and up to date information on the performance and progress of each student. CMI as a category of computer programme that may be used by educators and instructors to organize and manage data related to instruction for attaining the stipulated institutional objectives in a most effective way. FEATURES OF CMI Computers are able to perform the task of managing instructions with the help of a category of suitable software programme specifically designed for educational purposes like: 1. Diagnosis of entry behavior of the learner It helps in the early diagnosis of the strengths and weakness of the learner in terms of their previous knowledge and experiences related to a particular knowledge and skill area, their interests, attitudes and aptitudes. 2. Setting of instructional objectives Computers software’s are available that can help in analyzing test and the other database information about the characteristics of the learners. It will help in formulating the goals and objectives for a particularly course or piece of instruction. 3. Generating individualized instructional plans Depending upon the need, characteristics, nature and individuality of the learners, computer software’s are able to generate and organize individualized instructional plans for countless learners at one or the other times; average, gifted, slow or disabled. 4. Generating instructional materials and learning experiences Suiting to the individualized instructional plans and strategies computer software’s can generate appropriate instructional materials and opportunities of interactive learning experiences to the learners of varying needs, interest and abilities. Eg: programmed instruction, multimedia self-instruction or group instruction including slides or tape presentations. 5. There shall be clear directions available for telling the learners what to do for achieving the stipulated objectives.

Providing remedial instructions Computer software can very well manage any progress related to remedial instructions to the needy learners. On the basis of the learning difficulties diagnosed and the probable causes detected, this software now can suggest all the possible remedies helpful in the planning and organization of instructions. 8. Management of information and record keeping Computer software may help in a big way for the collection, storage, classification and dissemination of information through a well-organized system of record keeping and its maintenance. Most computer managed instruction applications are special purpose data management tools. Applications of computer managed instruction vary from simple student grade record book programmes to sophisticated diagnostic and perspective system. The field of CMI cannot be limited to the boundary walls of the usual classroom and school students. It encircles all types of self-learning and distance education modes and reaches all types of learners and their instructions such as adult learning, mass education programmes, special educations, disabled and disadvantageous groups and children of the society. Thus CMI may be credited nowadays to have the capability of managing the entire spectrum of the teaching learning or instructional process covering all the fields and areas of our education system.
