Borderland
SOC 248T: Post Soviet ParadoxesRyan Kelley Professor ShevchenkoNovember 16, 2016
Response to The Bulgarian Borderland by L. Melishkevich SUMMARY Main Claim of Paper:
Religious divisions in Madan (and other Bulgarian towns in the Rhodope region) are produced by a
religious borderland in which individuals grapple with ideological conflict and tension,
characterized by Eastern vs. Western influences. Support: Factual information and quotes from
Muslim Lives in Eastern Europe; Supportive information (for comparisons) from other books
/places examined this semester. CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK (with some complimentary
questions) Argument: Pushing back against Ghodsee s notion that Madan is unique due to the
combination of its large Muslim populations and the collapse of GORUBSO, the paper builds off
past discussions of borderland (with Where the World Ended and Consecution and Social Change)
to argue that a religious borderland is responsible for divisions in the Bulgarian Muslim population.
I have little critique of the broad argument (I think it s rather brilliant!) BUT I think it suffers from
organizational and evidence deficiencies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Is this borderland signifiant for the rest of Bulgaria? How? I admire how you took your paper road
the road that Ghodsee appears hesitant to travel: You focus on the religious experience itself as
significant rather than drawing connections to economic and political life. Why do you think
Ghodsee expands her argument to include gender and ethnicity? How could your argument benefit
from these other lines of

Colonial America Analysis
A seven letter word that is shrouded in both hatred and guilt of the destruction of countless
cultures; at the expense of cheap labor and profit. Yes slavery can be seen as one of humanities
worst point in history. To separate a family or force another man/woman to do your biding is
absolutely deplorable. And we have looked back to our past in shame and wondered how these
people that went through slaverygot through all of it. We know of a way to find out by looking into

these unheard survivors. Christianity is the largest religion in the United States of America; nearly

In a historical fiction story by Toni Morrison called Beloved it follows what life is like during
the Reconstruction period of America. In Beloved we follow the life of Sethe along with her
daughter Denver. They use to be a family of seven until the ghost of Sethe s first baby daughter;
the baby was named Beloved. Later in the story a friend/lover from the plantation Sethe came
from named Paul D. Eventually Paul D rids the family of the ghost baby, but later on a strange
woman comes into the trio s life who coincidently is named Beloved. Whenever Beloved is
around Sethe and Paul D she reminds them of the horrors of slavery and the bad that they both
have done in their life, while when she is with Denver she sees hope and the idea of a sister she
never had. Once Sethe begins to accept the wrongs she has done Beloved is no longer around.
Beloved as a woman represents all of the harm and horror of slavery, because Sethe remembers all
of the abuse and murder while Paul D thinks of himself as only a

Racial Diversity In Schools
While racial diversity in schools has been stressed by many scholars, its importance has been
excessively recognized by society. Therefore, it would make sense that individuals who are most
qualified would reach their maximum potential, yet many students across the country are
discriminated based on their ethnicity because diversity is needed in the classroom. Even though
diversity spreads ideas and cultures, should the issue of the lack of diversity be the main concern of
schools? The common argument that diversity in schools would be beneficial is tenuously held
because of the many reasons that continue to prove that diversity in schools is a miniscule factor in
the improvement of education. Although diversity in schools will allow students to socialize with
others of different races, the absence of diversity will allow equally qualified students of different
races to excel, allow foreign students to retain their cultural identity, and prevent the social
alienation of races in cliques.
When applying to colleges, can we say that the fear racial groups such as Asian Americans have
when bubbling in what ethnicity they are is justified? Colleges have been pushed to include
diversity in their campuses, and while this provides more opportunities for minorities, it lessens the
acceptance rate for Asians tremendously. In 1996, California banned state universities from
considering race and ethnicity in admissions decisions and Princeton professor Thomas Espenshade
and his

Case Study On The Development Life Cycle Of CALPAS
3.0 Introduction After discussing the literature preview in the previous chapter, this chapter will
discuss about the project planning phase and methodology use in the project. The sub topics is
described and determined by the model to be used. Methodology is the function of selecting the
objectives of the project and establishing the policies, procedures and programs necessary for
achieving them. It involves planning for schedule development, budget development, project
administration, leadership styles and conflict management. It is very important because project
planning can eliminate or reduce uncertainty, improve efficiency of the operation, obtain a better
understanding of the objective etc. The chapter will end with a questionnaire and analysis of the

Mental Illness And Gun Violence In America
Mental Illness and Gun Violence in America
On the night of October 1, 2017, Jason Aldean took to the stage as the final act of what would
have been an epic conclusion to the Route 91 Harvest music festival. With 22,000 attendees, the
festival consisted of three days of laughter, alcohol, and everyone s favorite country music. The
audience was packed tightly around the stage, dancing and singing as Aldean strummed his
guitar. It was then that 64 year old Stephen Paddock opened fire on the crowd from the 32nd
floor of his Mandalay Bay hotel room. At the end of his rampage, 58 people were left dead and
489 injured in what is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. This act
of senseless violence has left law enforcement and victims scouring for answers as to why such a
devastating act was perpetrated. Since Paddock was found dead in his hotel room from a self
inflicted gunshot wound, authorities have unveiled a life of gambling, fantasies of violence, and a
neglected childhood, all stoking the question: Was mental illness to blame? Though this conclusion
is one that US policymakers, journalists, and the general public tend to align themselves with,
psychiatric research and gun violence statistics state otherwise.
Politics And Assumptions In the aftermath of mass shootings, the United States democratic and
political discourse oftentimes concentrates on the impact of mental illness. For instance, the media
did not hesitate to diagnose Dylann Roof,

Acetone Molar Mass
The purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate how to calculate the molar mass of a volatile
liquid using the ideal gas law. By vaporizing a small sample of acetone and condensing it into
liquid while measuring temperature, pressure, volume, and mass, the number of moles of the gas
substance and its molar mass can be calculated. An accurate calculation of the moles of acetone gas
was allowed due to the hole in the foil of the test tube, which ensured that excess oxygen was
driven out of the test tube and only acetone gas was left. In order to accurately calculate the mass
of the acetone gas, the test tube was placed in an ice water bath to condense the acetone gas into a
liquid.
An uncertainity of 0.001g was appropriate for the mass measurements ... Show more content on

First, when the acetone was vaporized in the boiling water bath, it was assumed that the pressure
inside the test tube was equal to the outside air pressure due to the hole in the aluminum foil. If
this assumption produced a source of error, it would have led to an inaccurate measurement of the
mass of acetone gas in the test tube, leading to an inaccurate calculation of the substance s molar
mas. Second, when the acetone was vaporized in the boiling water bath, it was assumed that the
temperature of the water was equal to the temperature of the gas. This assumption could produce a
source of error which would lead to an inaccurate measurement of the molar mass of acetone gas
due to flaws with the ideal gas equation. Third, since the barometric pressure was measured using
an online weather service, it is possible that the pressure outside was not equal to the air pressure
inside the chemistry lab. This inaccuracy could lead to false calculations of acetone s molar mass
due to pressure s role in the ideal gas equation. Many of the systematic errors that are possible are
due to flaws with the ideal gas equation and assumptions about the ideal nature of the acetone
sample and ideal conditions of the laboratory. Finally, it was assumed that there was no excess
condensation on the test tube even after drying it. However, this assumption would lead to an
inaccurate measurement of the mass of the acetone gas, creating a larger

Caribbean Family Structure
Left. Jump. Duck. Run. Right. Shoot. The boy sits on the TV playing his video games. His sister
just returned from the mall with her friends. They are waiting for their mother and father to come
home from work, as they do every day. This is one common family structure in the America society,
but other societies, such as the Caribbean, also have familystructure. How are the infrastructures in
the Caribbean society different and similar to American society familial infrastructures? How are
these family structures preparing their children for a future within their respective societies? The
main people preparing these children are the parents.
In Caribbean societies, Men are valued more than females and are seen as the primary
disciplinarians and decision makers ( Family Structure ). The men are the unilateral money
makers for their families. They also have little to no relationship with their children, if they do, it
is with the son. In America, the fathers usually work but, sometimes, they are stay at home dads
and care for the house and the children. For example, in my family, my father worked during the
time my sister was alive but, when I was born, he quit work and became a stay at home dad. The
fathers in Caribbean and American societies have one main difference, Caribbean dads always work
and never have a relationship with their children while American fathers tend to have a better
relationship with their children. However, they have one similarity, most of the time,

Louis XIV Domestic Policies
The defining attribute of a successful governmental policy the optimization of domestic tranquility
and foreign reputation. Louis XIV asserted an absolutist rule to optimize the situation. In his rule,
Louis XIV wanted to have a single king with absolute power, a single national religion, and a
single legal system. He also wanted to spread Bourbon influence throughout Europe. He is
successful in accomplishing the optimization of domestic and foreign policy to a certain extent.
Louis domestic policies are ultimately successful. He revokes the Edict of Nantes and replaces it
with the Edict of Fontainebleau. He does this in order to make all non Catholics leave France. He

Elasticity of Labour Demand Essay example
Elasticity of Labour Demand Labour is a derived demand realised by the demand for the product
that the labour will be producing. The theory of labour demand explains the behaviour of the firm
with the key principle being to achieve the optimal amounts of labour employers will want to utilise
at different wage levels. We must make several assumptions when describing how the long run
labour demand is derived. Firstly we must assume that firms are profit maximisers and therefore
will attempt always to minimise any costs incurred. Further assumptions to simplify analysis of
labour demand are that there are no costs of employment other than hourly wages and productivity
of labour is independent of time worked. I.e. Labour is homogenous.... Show more content on

If this equation was rewritten, the slope of the isoquant would be found. The slope of the isoquant
can be formulated by the marginal rate of technical substitution. (†K/ †L) = (MPL /MPK) As
previously mentioned, a profit maximising firm will always wish to minimise costs. A budget
constraint will signify the fixed sum that a firm can spend on inputs. It is the financial
constraint of a firm. Capital can be given a charge of r (per unit bought) and labour can be given
a price, w (wage rate per hour). Cost of Production = wL + rK If a firm were to spend its total
budget on capital, it could purchase C/r, and similarly, to spend all its funds on labour, C/w
could be hired. The slope of the firmsГ‚ financial constraint, or isocost, will hence be w/r, and all
other points along the line show the various purchases they could make of the inputs. Criteria: В·
An isocost line will give combinations that are equally costly В· A higher isocost line is
associated with a larger budget В· The slope is linear and is the negative of the ratio of input
prices ( w/r) Diagram Isocost Long run choice of inputs The long run labour demand curve is
derived from the isocost isoquant analysis. The point where the isocost is tangential to the isoquant
is where the maximum output is

The Understanding Of Global Diversity
Guyana The world can be a very diverse place it is composed of many different individuals,
places, cultures, religions, and languages. People fear what they don t understand. Fear paired with
a lack of knowledge is a breeding ground for violence. A lack of Knowledge and understanding of
others is a major contributor of many past wars that has been spawned. The understanding of global
diversity helps the United States Military build strong relationships with neighboring countries and
encourages peace around the world. Guyanais on the northeastern portion of South America, the
Atlantic Ocean borders the countries north, while Suriname borders the east, Venezuela borders the
northwest, on the south and southwest is Brazil. The capital city is Georgetown. In an area of
83,000 square miles (212,000 square kilometers), Majority of the population of Guyana reside
within the coastal belt, which is below sea level. Guyana is comprised of four major physical
features the coastal region, interior savannah region, highland region, and the hilly sandy clay belt.
Each region may have similar characteristics but they are not the same. The land dictates how
people in these areas will maintain survival. The Coastal Region of Guyana is home to about
90percent of the population ( Climate andPhysicalFeatures. Guyana.1Feb.2003.Web.2Feb.2003.

Does Economic Globalization Affect Interstate Military...
DOES ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION AFFECT INTERSTATE MILITARY CONFLICT?
I
Although there is still not agreement on a common definition of this phenomenon, in this paper I
will accept the one developed by R.M. Joshi (2009). He identifies, indeed, Economic Globalization
as the increasing economic integration and interdependence of national, regional and local
economies across the world through an intensification of cross border movement of goods, services,
technologies and capital
There are two good reasons, in my opinion to accept Prof. Joshi s definition. First, it contains two
core point affecting every aspect of that phenomena: Interdependence and Cross border
movements. Second, it focuses on the interaction among markets avoiding approximate
expression often used in public debate as Global Economy and Global Market that could mislead
the reader, where national states still play an important role in Economies destinies, many people
are not involved in economy, some markets still operate on a local level, transnational corporations
are anyway nationally based and we can not (still) talk about a global labour market. (Aspers and
Kohl 2011).

The one among trade and peace is an old story. Yet in the XVII century Montesquieu (1758) wrote
Peace is the natural effect of trade. Two nations who traffic with each other become reciprocally
dependent . Another giant of that time, Immanuel Kant (1795), seems to share this point of view in
his Essay on Perpetual Peace.

Inner City Stereotypes Essay
Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian; we all have our thoughts on them. What do I mean you ask?
The thoughts that we have already preset for the different races. The assumptions we use to portray
a single person or group; are stereotypes. The unreliable generalization about all members of a
group that does not recognize individual differences within the group. We will not talk about
stereotypes everywhere. Lets narrow the focus down to innercity stereotypes.
An inner city is an area inside of a city associated with social and economic problems. Think of Los
Angeles, there are multiple neighborhoods inside it; such as Watts, and Compton. Even better think
of New York City, some of the neighborhoods include; Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens, and Manhattan.

Most people will have negative views and associates them as a criminal. They will assume that you
live in poverty, you are on government assistance, and that you obtain a low level education. These
views are forced on us because of the way society has delineate them. For example when we see
a news report about a car that has been stolen in the inner city we instantly think a poor raised
black man; but why? Well society has told us that if one black man has stolen, then all black men
are thieves. On television they advertise welfare and government assistance, but what they show is
a poor single parent, who is generally a minority. Society tell us that these stereotypes are what
everyone is like, but that is just not the case.
I can tell you first hand that the stereotypes about us inner city people are wrong. I say us
because I am an inner city born and raised resident. Some people from these parts commit crime
therefore it supports the notion and claims of these stereotypes. Why do people get shocked or
surprised when a stereotype is wrong? I was raised to never judge a book by it s cover, I understand
everyone was not raised like me; everyone claims they do not judge before knowing the facts,
which we all know to not be true. Before meeting someone we already have an idea of who they

Nullification Crisis Significance
The Nullification Crisis was significant. The Nullification Crisis started in 1828 when the Congress
passed a very high tariff on manufactured goods from Europe. The Southerners started protesting
against tariffs and called to secede from the United States. Since anger of tariffs continued to build
in the South, the Congress passed a new, lower tariff in 1832, hoping that the protest in the South
would die down. However, the South Carolinalegislature passed the Nullification act, an act
refusing to pay the illegal tariffs of 1828 and 1832. If the federal government interfered then the
South will continue calling for secession and the union will split apart. The significance of the
Nullification Crisis was that it caused President Jackson

A Comparison of Guido and Dora Orefice in the Film Life Is...
The characters of Guido and Dora Orefice, from the Italian film Life is Beautiful have many
differences in their personalities and backgrounds but are very similar in some important ways.
They are both strong willed, independent, and have strong family values. Guido is a Jewish man,
who is presumably poor because the beginning of the film deals with him attempting to find a
job. He eventually finds one as a waiter, which suits his personality because he is the type of
person that always wants to please others and make them happy. Despite the prejudice he
receives for being Jewish he is a very happy and good humored person. Dora on the other hand,
grew up in very different circumstances. She is not Jewish, probably Christian, and is from a
fairly wealthy family. She is already engaged to another man, the man who refused Guido a job
after he accidentally dropped eggs on his head. She is a somewhat reserved teacher and seems to
be a very responsible, well behaved, and compliant woman, until she meets Guido that is. Guido
falls in love with her immediately when he meets her. Dora doesn t appear to fall in love as
instantaneously as Guido does but she eventually fall for him and she asks him to take her away.
They leave her engagement party together on horseback in front of her whole family. As a result
of her leaving the other man for an undesirable , Dora is ostracized by her entire family. In their
minds she has shamed them for marrying a Jewish man. However, she goes on to

Nuclear Fusion Vs Nuclear Radiation
Each atom of a particle element the majority of the time look and behave the same as any other
atom of the same element. When comparing two atoms of Carbon for example, they both contain
the same number of protons and electrons. In this case the both contain 6 protons. The equal
number of protons and neutrons in this atomcreates stability in its nucleus. The two atoms of
carbon also have the same mass, approximately 12 amu, but like all things in nature there are
exceptions. A different atom of carbon can contain 8 neutrons in its nucleus for every 6 protons.
When an atom of an element contains more or less neutrons to protons an unstable environment is
now created in the atom which is called a radioactive isotope. The loss of a neutronin the nucleus of
an atom emits energy which can also be referred to as radiation. What makes these radioactive
isotopes so different between stable atoms is the energy that is released through the loss of the
extra neutron in the atom in an attempt to stabilize. This energy that is released in this everyday
phenomenon has become quiet helpful as we find uses for it in our everyday lives. Radiation has
quickly become on the most influential aspects of modern medicine. One aspect of medicine that

Nuclear fusion occurs in the nucleuses of two elements that have somewhat light masses. The
nucleuses of these two elements are brought together at extremely high speeds to ultimately
create the new nucleus of a new element. Very few radioactive particles are created through this
process, it also mostly takes place in the stars. Where as in nuclear fission, the nucleus of a heavy
atom is split into two smaller nuclei. During this process the loss of neutrons releases energy in
the form of gamma rays. This process rarely occurs in nature due to the force require to split an

Themes Of Birds In Psycho
Psycho a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock was created for the purpose of inciting fear and
suspense to engage its audience.
Hitchcock portrayed the message of mental health throughout the film.
Psycho both encouraged and allowed the audience to reflect on the message of mental health also.
Hitchcock utilises birds and taxidermy, the visual motif of eyes, and camera angles to engage his
audience and to create suspense.
Within the movie Psycho, birds are a prominent motif. The themes of isolation and duality, were
emphasized by the use of bird related language, such as Marion s surname being Crane and her
being from Phoenix. While dining with Norman in the parlor of the Bates motel, Marion is told by
Bates that she eats like a bird , this transitions to Norman stating that he knows a lot about
taxidermy and the stuffing of birds, however not so much about how they are when they are alive.
Hitchcock suggests the fact that Norman doesn t know how to function normally within society,
however indicating he does know how to coexist with his mother . The taxidermy of the birds
foreshadows that his mother is in fact stuffed (preserved) and Norman is the one keeping her alive .
Hitchcock effectively utilised taxidermy and birds, to highlight Norman s mental health. These
create suspense, to help engage the audience.
A prominent visual motif Hitchcock utilised within the film was the characters eyes. The themes of
voyeurism and surveillance were underlined throughout

Yellow Fever Disease
Yellow fever is a disease caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. It is a disease that is
mostly found in tropical areas like South America and Africa (Cutter 2016). While scientific
inquiry was certainly one of the main reasons that yellow fever became one of the first viruses
that we were able to eradicate, it was not the only driving force. A biosocial approach to
dissecting global health issues not only takes into account all the biological aspects that come
into play, but also how society, history, culture and the political economy impact these global
diseases (Farmer et al. 2013). This approach allows for a multidimensional analysis that gives more
insight than any biological or clinical study ever could. By looking at yellow fever from a biosocial
approach you can see how the Panama Canal played a major role in the discovery of it... Show more

another aspect of power separation between the two central characters.
I believe that such displays of power inequality amongst characters such as Sade and Marat could
be further explored through the cage like setting stated earlier. Upon entering the intimate yet

After meeting with Kendall and his associates in April 1857, Gallaudet accept the offer
(Gallaudet, 1983). In addition to accepting the position, Gallaudet also proposes the idea of
expanding the institution into a college for the Deaf (Gallaudet, 1912). Kendall supported the
idea and promised to speak to the Board of Directors and solicit the aid of Congress (Gallaudet,
1912). While Kendall would be the president of the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of
Deaf and Dumb and Blind, school for children, Gallaudet would become the president of the
college once Congress conferred the institution full collegiate powers in 1864. In 1865, the
blind students at the institution were transferred a As plans were being made to establish the
college, Gallaudet and Kendall faced a couple of disagreements. In 1864, Gallaudet drafted a bill
that would grant the institution collegiate powers and worked on it with Senator James W.
Grimes of Iowa to enact it. Gallaudet noted that some oppositions was faced because some
doubted if deaf persons had the ability to learn collegiate studies (Gallaudet, 1912). Nevertheless,
the law was passed in both houses of Congress and was signed by President Lincoln on April 8,
1864 (Armstrong, 2014). Gallaudet exclaims that when Kendall received the news, he was pleased
but remarked that he hoped I was not going (Armstrong, 2014, p. 4). Additionally, Kendall and
Gallaudet disputed about the admission policy. Gallaudet believed that there should a

The Wizard Of Oz Literary Analysis
The Value of Literature:
The epic journey to find the promised land in The Wizard of Oz
Every character in The Wizard of Oz has a reason for going to Emerald city, each have the same
reason but are all in search of something different. Their reasoning for going to the promise land,
Emerald city, is to find the Great Wizard, Oz. Although they are all on a journey for Emerald city
and Oz, what they are in search of is very different as is each character. Through Archetypal Theory
it is shown that each character s reason for setting out on the journey to Emerald city distinguishes
their type of character. Their journey is to find the promised land. Although they are not aware, the
characters slowly gain what they originally set out to acquire throughout their journey, rather than
at their destination. Although the journey seems as easy as following the yellow brick road, there
are many obstacles the characters; the Scarecrow, Tin Woodmanand the Cowardly Lion, must face
throughout this novel. Through stages along their journey, the characters are all thrown into pivotal
positions that they do not realize the importance of. In turn, this results in a drastic development of
their characteristics. In these stages they are put in situations, which allows them to grow and
adapt to what they are seeking on their journey, are what allows them to earn what they were
seeking. Each character is in search for Oz so he may grant them one wish for whatever they
desire, for the Scarecrow;

The Harvard Management Company and Inflation Protected Bonds Executive Summary The
Harvard Management Company (HMC) was established in 1974 with the goals providing world
class investment management focused solely on generating strong results to support the
educational and research objectives of Harvard University. The company s goals are to correctly
measure Harvard University s financial requirements and to provide investment opportunities that
will accurately meet or exceed them with the lowest amount of risk assumed by the institution. In

Instead of relying solely on external management, they allocate 68% of their endowment to
internal management and the remaining 32% to outside asset managers. In order to do this, HMC
employed 38 investment professionals and 148 other employees whose jobs were solely to
manage the $19 billion dollars in total assets, of which $15.1 billion were endowment funds. This
management strategy generated expenses of around $93 million dollars per year (49 basis points),
and produced a real return of 11.3%, after expenses. This method of investment costs about 19 more
basis points than a passive strategy and about 51 basis points cheaper than a typical active
investment strategy using 100% outside managers. Harvard University opted for this strategy
because it is cheaper than a traditional active management strategy while still allowing them the
ability to adjust their risks taken and expected returns in order to remain on the efficient frontier of
what return was required to meet their internal institutional goals. Portfolio Examples with

In A Society Where So Much Emphasis Is Placed On The Way
In a society where so much emphasis is placed on the way one looks, it s no surprise that one
could be self conscious about their body image. As a result, there are some who take drastic actions
in order to maintain this distorted image of themselves. These actions can not only affect the way
an individual perceives themselves, but it also could have more serious, life threatening
consequences, including death. Nonetheless, treatment and recovery are possible. Anorexia Nervosa

around food and weight and out of all the psychiatric conditions, it has the highest death rate (

While there are two different types of anorexia, their symptoms and assumed causes are relatively
the same. Goldberg (2016) notes that although anorexia essentially means loss of appetite, this
definition is inaccurate as people with this disorder are in fact, hungry, but refuse to eat.
Individuals suffering from anorexia, tend to have an obsessive fear of gaining weight or becoming
fat, so they start behaving in ways that causes them to lose an excessive amount of weight, by either
restricting the amount of food consumed, exercising too much, or starving themselves (Anorexia
Nervosa: Signs, Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment; Smith, Melinda, M.A., and Jeanne Segal,

when they are in fact underweight, as well as overly weighing themselves to see if they gained any
weight, overly obsessing over food labels and nutrition, and developing strange eating habits, such
as cutting food into tiny pieces, eating alone, and/or hiding food; In addition. people struggling
with this disorder tend to have a low self esteem, feel hopeless, and become socially withdrawn
from family, friends, and activities they once enjoyed. ( Anorexia: Signs, Symptoms, Causes

Prior to reading the article I had an idea of what shingles was, and heard some information
regarding the epidemic of shingles, but never knew exactly what it was. While reading the article I
discovered that shingles is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus,
which is actually the same virus that produces chickenpoxthat produces a painful skin rash within
the host. Since shingles is a part of the herpes family it usually appears as a strip of blisters
anywhere on the body. Another interesting fact that I came across within the article, was that a host

Naturally Occurring Radiation
Uranium:
1: Where is this substance most likely found, and how abundant is it?
Uranium can be found in a lot of places in small quantities such as rocks, soil, and water. However,
its harder to find uranium in amounts that are worth the trouble.
2: What type of decay does this substance undergo, and how harmful can it be to those exposed?
Naturally forming uranium undergoes radioactive decay by emission of an alpha particle and
gamma radiation. As the decay continues, it releases radiation. This is an extreme health issue that,
in large amounts, can cause cancer and liver damage.
3: What can be done to protect against the radiation produced by this isotope?

Happiness In Albert Camus The Myth Of Sisyphus
Albert Camus understanding of happiness is explained through his perspective of The Myth of
Sisyphus.Towards the end of the story, Sisyphus punishment for forsaking the orders of Pluto was
to push a large rock up a mountain for all eternity. The Greeks believed this to be the cruelest
punishment a mortal could be given. The idea of a meaningless task being done over and over
again is what some might call absurd. One might think that happinessis not possible in such
circumstances. A moment of gratification cannot be seen as something desirable if the same task
is to be repeated. However, Camus believes otherwise. the purpose is achieved... and Sisyphus
watches the stone rush down in a few moments toward lower world whence he will have to push it
up again toward the summit. He goes back down to the plain. (4) The significance of Sisyphus
going down the mountain to repeat his task is explained by Camus. Through accepting the
meaningless task, Sisyphus also accepts his unfair fate. He is calm and at peace with himself
despite the absurdity of his punishment. It could be understood that although the task may be
meaningless, Sisyphus is able accept his fate and continue to move... Show more content on

happiness is about having balance in life. The extremes of states of characters are called vices.
Vices are states of character that a person would usually not be proud of, like greed or envy.
However, having vices is not improbable. Aristotle said, For moral excellence is concerned with
pleasures and pains; it is on account of the pleasure that we do bad things and on account of the
pain that we abstain from noble ones (3). People will often fray into their vices to obtain monetary
happiness. Although Aristotle believes being virtuous is what is needed to be sustainably happy,

The phone was still in working condition but could not be accessed because of security measures
that could potentially wipe all the data on it. A reporter from the New York Times, Mike Isaac,
informs on the situation in depth, writing how, being a potentially huge piece of evidence, the court
demanded that the company that made the phone, Apple, create a means to either bypass or remove
the encryption on it so the FBI could access the phone s contents. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has
refused to do this, stating that No reasonable person would find [it] acceptable to create a technique
that threatens the securityof others. What started as a private issue spread like wildfire as it was
made public by Apple. This problem has created two sides that ask whether Apple should have the
right to not oblige or if the FBI has the power to force them to make these means a reality. This
specific issue opens up a greater problem that takes it outside the US and affects anyone with any
kind of technology connected around the world: should the governmenthave the right to access
information on your phone? It s a seemingly yes or no answer, but the precedent this situation will

Analysis Of Sweet Sweetback s Baadasssss Song And ...
In both Sweet Sweetback s Baadasssss Song and Do the Right Thing the relationship between
blackness and violence fluctuates between a mode of aggression and a tool of survival. Both
films consistently attempt to represent violence by blacks as a symptom of white dominance
and brutality. In Sweet Sweetback black violence is perceived by the dominant white
institutions (i.e. the police and the officers) as an act of intentional aggression. White perception
deems that blacks will be violent both physically and sexually because they are naturally violent.
It is the responsibility of the whites to protect society from the hypersexual, hyper violent black
male (Class Discussions, 2014). Such is the case when police officers storm the hotel room in
search of Sweetback only to find a black male naked with a white woman in the bed, presumably
after having sex. The officers were quick to physically attack both individuals, though the black
man received a longer and harsher punishment. Their response highlights the taboo nature of
black and white relations in Sweetback as well as the dominant fear of black males as sexual
aggressors who take advantage of white women whenever possible (Class Discussions, 2014).
The film is careful to frame Sweetback s violence as self defense; he is only violent when he
absolutely has to be, not because he simply wants to be violent. By framing Sweetback s actions in
this way, the film establishes the idea that black violence is a tool of

Pros
Develop knowledge center in fast growing emerging economy. Opening a knowledge center in

the world economy in the coming years. Although the economy has slowed down recently, and the
on going problems of political corruption and poor infrastructure make business in India

Acquire the leveraged economics of thought leadership. The unique model of thought leadership
would allow Monitor to develop research papers or models that it could resell to multiple clients.
This dynamic produces far better economics than the selling human hours model as it is more
profitable on a scaled basis. Since Monitor already has a well established base of clients with its
consulting relationship, developing intellectual property it could sell to those clients and use to
build out its client rolodex will serve to improve the notoriety of the firm. In addition to the
profitability this model provides, it gives the firm a reputation for being a thought leader in the
industry and could increase client pull if executed successfully.
Cons
Dilutes brand with possibly inferior work product. The downside to acquiring talent in an emerging
economy is that in many cases that talent may not be able to product a work product that is on par
with expectations in countries where your client base operations. While measures can be taken to
improve quality ( increasing the number of employees + hiring only the top talent ), these measures
will only serve to increase the costs of operating in this environment and undermine the primary
driver for entering the country. Further, obtaining the right mix of cost and quality will require
significant managerial oversight, which the firm may not have the bandwidth to provide.
Profitability gains may not be achieved due to

Why Do Motorcycle Saddlebags
There are few motorcycle accessories that are more important than your motorcycle saddlebags,
and it s important that you give them proper care to make them last. Remember, your saddlebags
will be holding some of your most important stuff, and since they are usually out of sight, out of
mind, it is easy to forget about them when it comes time to care for your bike.
Remember the days before you had motorcycle saddlebags? I sure do. I used to wear a backpack
which, when loaded, would offset the balance and sometimes make for a scary ride. If I ever

Any more often than this and you are wasting your time, and the cleaning product. If you ride in the
sun, or your bike spends time parked out in the sun, a cleaner/conditioner with UV (ultraviolet)
protection is a must. The sun will wreak havoc on your leather saddlebags, drying them out and will
turn them into brittle and useless scraps of leather.
When using the cleaning/conditioning product for the first time, wipe it on a small area on the
underside, and look for any staining or discoloration before cleaning the whole bag. Some leather
experts say to stay away from products containing petroleum products. My rule of thumb is to use
something that others have had great success with regardless of the ingredients.
I try to look for leather products that penetrate deeply and offer good moisture protection. One
great old standby is saddle soap. Saddle soap is as old as leather (it seems), is cheap and is very
gentle on the leather. Some say it s old fashioned, and compared to modern conditioning products,
doesn t offer enough protection from the elements.

Harriet Burge s Model
For decades, experts have investigate the role of mycotoxins and how they related to people
suffering negative health effects after occupying a water damaged building. In 1966, the early years
of this investigation, Harriet Burge, a renowned industry leader in fungal contamination, gave a risk
assessment to review the indoor contaminations of mold. What did they incorporate?
Burge s model examined both the allergic and poisonous characteristics related to mold. During the
study of mycotoxins, Burge s model showed that the majority of mold growth has not developed

Dave Gallup, chairperson at EMLab, conducted a study where he created a formula to look at the

Despite the fact that these scientific calculations made sense and other researchers had made

An Argument In Favor Of Animal Testing
Imagine: you re in a room less than a foot long. There s nothing inside this room, just you. There

being forced to inhale toxic fumes or be fed poison with corrosive chemicals rubbed on your skin

There are many other remedies that can be done such as blood transfusion and organ transplant. A
reason why they would seem animal testing as acceptable is that it would be less cruel to test on a
animal than a human.
Another argument that disagrees with my point is that animal testing does not benefit humans
alone but the animals itself. For example cats are treated with Feline Leukemia and this prolongs
the life of domestic animals and wildlife when needed to be treated. From this example it is obvious
that animals are also benefitting themselves.
Although animals benefit humans and themselves I don t see the problem with testing on one
human then thousands of innocent animals, a life is a life so if it s one versus a thousand what
is the problem with sacrificing one human that has the same functions as others? Again humans
simply choose animals over themselves as animals are viewed to have a lower quality of life,
however every life is precious and when we choose to end lives or even our own that does not
make you more human or use the excuse of because we are humans and we need to start
appreciating life as well as others. There is simply no excuse to test on

Yoder Wise defines conflict as a disagreement in values or beliefs which causes harm or the

difficult types of conflictto resolve are those due to differing values, opinions, and beliefs among

Intrapersonal conflict is conflict that occurs within an individual (Yoder Wise, 2015, p. 433)‌.
When nursing professionals are continually engaging team building into practice, this type of
conflict can be resolved more quickly and strengthen the culture within. Another type of conflict is
organizational conflict. This type of conflict occurs in healthcare when nursing professionals
disagree with institutional policies and procedures (p. 433). When collaborative resolution skills are
applied to organizational conflict a significant amount of time is needed for resolution. The most
common and most difficult type of conflict is interpersonal conflict. Yoder Wise defines
interpersonal conflict as conflict that occurs between or among individuals (p. 433). This type of
conflict requires nursing leaders to have strong conflict management skills. Strong leadership skills
require the individual to quickly identify conflict so unit dynamics and patient care do not suffer.
When managing conflict, the leader should create an environment that fosters the input from each

sufficing life, by which we mean a happy and honourable life. According to some scholars, this
definition is so comprehensive that it can hardly be improved upon. Aristotle‟s definition
communicates the primary objectives of the state however we must study some more definitions
of the State. Holland: State is a Politically organized people of a definite territory. Prof Woodrow
Wilson, `State is a People organized for law within a definite territory.‟Though these two

Sigmund Freud s Psychodynamic Theory
Sigmund Freud s psychodynamic theory can be described as a view that explains personality in
terms of conscious and unconscious forces such as unconscious desires and beliefs (Chegg
Study). Sigmund Freud developed this theory in the early 20th century based on the assumption
that our unconscious desires influence many of our actions in our everyday lives (McLeod
2009). In addition, another assumption of Freud s that contributed to this theory was that our
childhood experiences influence us greatly and make us into the person we are today. Freud
proposed the psychodynamic theory according to which personality consisted of the Id, the
super ego and the ego (McLeod 2009). The Id is the pleasure principle concerned with instincts
and pleasure and operates by primary processes which thereby, does not take into account the
reality principle (McLeod 2009). For example, if you were extremely thirsty; instead of going to
buy a bottle of water or refilling your own bottle, you would drink from someone else s water
bottle without their permission and without them knowing. This example demonstrates how the
Id principle operates without taking into account what is socially acceptable in order to satisfy a
need. The ego is the reality principle which not only operates by secondary processes concerned
with reason and logic, but also mediates between the Id and super ego according to reality
(McLeod 2009). For example, in the same scenario, instead of drinking from someone else s water

North Korea Autocracy
Throughout our entire history there has been a prefered way of command. In the early stages of
civilizations, an autocracy was preferred. Now in the Modern Age, Democracy is favored. With
more globalization now than there ever was, the normal citizens of the State have more economic
influence. Democracy is the worst form of governmenton earth except for all the rest (Winston
Churchill) Like Churchill, I also think that Democracyis the prefered type of government for the
world we live in today because it leads to more economic growth. Democracy is a type of
government where the population of the State votes for the policies. Democratic Government can
be a pure Democracy, Republic or any mix of those two. Typically in a Democracy the policies
favor the public, like tax proportional to your income. Policies like that often give incentive for
innovations and trade, which, leads to growth of the State. Focus on Economicswhen investigating
is crucial. Take North Korea for example, they have a absolute monarchy. Due to that and the
hostility from the North Korean Government, there is little to no trade with that State. From what
we know about North Korea, they are far less medically advanced. Their literacy rate is also lower
than similar States like South Korea. With no solid... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Autocracy is a government that is influenced by a small group of powerful people. Although that
group can be elected by the public, often the group decides by itself. Autocracy leads to policies
that favor the small, powerful group, which, leads to poverty and low incentive for better work
than needed. Saying that, I do have to say that if the small web of people controlling the
government have a positive goal for their future, then there is little harm done. The main difference
between Democracy and Oligarchy is that in an Oligarchy there is a higher incentive for the
political leaders to favor the policies to the wealthy tip of the

Speech And Persuasive Speech
When I was in middle school around the sixth grade, a student in my class always picked on me
and made me feel embarrassed every time the word was said. The bully would call me that name
every time we were near each other or if we had a group and had to chat about a topic. It was
completely embarrassing and stressful because it was constant so it was all the time and the bully
would never learn because he never cared. So I was always OSTRICH. The dictionary definition of
ostrich is a large, two toed, swift footed flightless bird(dictionary.com). And connotations of the
word can be hurtful and stressful for most people having to be called a wild animal and if the
animal isn t so bright. And it may seem funny to other people but it is just hurtful to try and
compare someone s appearance to a wild animal. Why Ostrich is so important as a shameful
word is because it is being called a wild, dumb animal and basically is making fun of your body
shape as well and words can hurt more then your emotions.
According to my source over 44% of women and 15% of men in high school are trying to lose
weight because they think they look horrible about their body shapes and effects of this are
negative to women especially because they would cut themselves, smoke, drink, or have a eating
disorder. Obsessing about your appearance and weight will demonstrate your feelings and opinions
about yourself, which tells your teenager that your worth is based on your appearance. That

  • 2. Borderland SOC 248T: Post Soviet ParadoxesRyan Kelley Professor ShevchenkoNovember 16, 2016 Response to The Bulgarian Borderland by L. Melishkevich SUMMARY Main Claim of Paper: Religious divisions in Madan (and other Bulgarian towns in the Rhodope region) are produced by a religious borderland in which individuals grapple with ideological conflict and tension, characterized by Eastern vs. Western influences. Support: Factual information and quotes from Muslim Lives in Eastern Europe; Supportive information (for comparisons) from other books /places examined this semester. CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK (with some complimentary questions) Argument: Pushing back against Ghodsee s notion that Madan is unique due to the combination of its large Muslim populations and the collapse of GORUBSO, the paper builds off past discussions of borderland (with Where the World Ended and Consecution and Social Change) to argue that a religious borderland is responsible for divisions in the Bulgarian Muslim population. I have little critique of the broad argument (I think it s rather brilliant!) BUT I think it suffers from organizational and evidence deficiencies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Racial Diversity In Schools While racial diversity in schools has been stressed by many scholars, its importance has been excessively recognized by society. Therefore, it would make sense that individuals who are most qualified would reach their maximum potential, yet many students across the country are discriminated based on their ethnicity because diversity is needed in the classroom. Even though diversity spreads ideas and cultures, should the issue of the lack of diversity be the main concern of schools? The common argument that diversity in schools would be beneficial is tenuously held because of the many reasons that continue to prove that diversity in schools is a miniscule factor in the improvement of education. Although diversity in schools will allow students to socialize with others of different races, the absence of diversity will allow equally qualified students of different races to excel, allow foreign students to retain their cultural identity, and prevent the social alienation of races in cliques. When applying to colleges, can we say that the fear racial groups such as Asian Americans have when bubbling in what ethnicity they are is justified? Colleges have been pushed to include diversity in their campuses, and while this provides more opportunities for minorities, it lessens the acceptance rate for Asians tremendously. In 1996, California banned state universities from considering race and ethnicity in admissions decisions and Princeton professor Thomas Espenshade and his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Mental Illness And Gun Violence In America Mental Illness and Gun Violence in America On the night of October 1, 2017, Jason Aldean took to the stage as the final act of what would have been an epic conclusion to the Route 91 Harvest music festival. With 22,000 attendees, the festival consisted of three days of laughter, alcohol, and everyone s favorite country music. The audience was packed tightly around the stage, dancing and singing as Aldean strummed his guitar. It was then that 64 year old Stephen Paddock opened fire on the crowd from the 32nd floor of his Mandalay Bay hotel room. At the end of his rampage, 58 people were left dead and 489 injured in what is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. This act of senseless violence has left law enforcement and victims scouring for answers as to why such a devastating act was perpetrated. Since Paddock was found dead in his hotel room from a self inflicted gunshot wound, authorities have unveiled a life of gambling, fantasies of violence, and a neglected childhood, all stoking the question: Was mental illness to blame? Though this conclusion is one that US policymakers, journalists, and the general public tend to align themselves with, psychiatric research and gun violence statistics state otherwise. Politics And Assumptions In the aftermath of mass shootings, the United States democratic and political discourse oftentimes concentrates on the impact of mental illness. For instance, the media did not hesitate to diagnose Dylann Roof, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Acetone Molar Mass The purpose of this experiment was to demonstrate how to calculate the molar mass of a volatile liquid using the ideal gas law. By vaporizing a small sample of acetone and condensing it into liquid while measuring temperature, pressure, volume, and mass, the number of moles of the gas substance and its molar mass can be calculated. An accurate calculation of the moles of acetone gas was allowed due to the hole in the foil of the test tube, which ensured that excess oxygen was driven out of the test tube and only acetone gas was left. In order to accurately calculate the mass of the acetone gas, the test tube was placed in an ice water bath to condense the acetone gas into a liquid. An uncertainity of 0.001g was appropriate for the mass measurements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, when the acetone was vaporized in the boiling water bath, it was assumed that the pressure inside the test tube was equal to the outside air pressure due to the hole in the aluminum foil. If this assumption produced a source of error, it would have led to an inaccurate measurement of the mass of acetone gas in the test tube, leading to an inaccurate calculation of the substance s molar mas. Second, when the acetone was vaporized in the boiling water bath, it was assumed that the temperature of the water was equal to the temperature of the gas. This assumption could produce a source of error which would lead to an inaccurate measurement of the molar mass of acetone gas due to flaws with the ideal gas equation. Third, since the barometric pressure was measured using an online weather service, it is possible that the pressure outside was not equal to the air pressure inside the chemistry lab. This inaccuracy could lead to false calculations of acetone s molar mass due to pressure s role in the ideal gas equation. Many of the systematic errors that are possible are due to flaws with the ideal gas equation and assumptions about the ideal nature of the acetone sample and ideal conditions of the laboratory. Finally, it was assumed that there was no excess condensation on the test tube even after drying it. However, this assumption would lead to an inaccurate measurement of the mass of the acetone gas, creating a larger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are waiting for their mother and father to come home from work, as they do every day. This is one common family structure in the America society, but other societies, such as the Caribbean, also have familystructure. How are the infrastructures in the Caribbean society different and similar to American society familial infrastructures? How are these family structures preparing their children for a future within their respective societies? The main people preparing these children are the parents. In Caribbean societies, Men are valued more than females and are seen as the primary disciplinarians and decision makers ( Family Structure ). The men are the unilateral money makers for their families. They also have little to no relationship with their children, if they do, it is with the son. In America, the fathers usually work but, sometimes, they are stay at home dads and care for the house and the children. For example, in my family, my father worked during the time my sister was alive but, when I was born, he quit work and became a stay at home dad. The theory of labour demand explains the behaviour of the firm with the key principle being to achieve the optimal amounts of labour employers will want to utilise at different wage levels. We must make several assumptions when describing how the long run labour demand is derived. Firstly we must assume that firms are profit maximisers and therefore will attempt always to minimise any costs incurred. Further assumptions to simplify analysis of labour demand are that there are no costs of employment other than hourly wages and productivity of labour is independent of time worked. I.e. Labour is homogenous.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If this equation was rewritten, the slope of the isoquant would be found. The slope of the isoquant can be formulated by the marginal rate of technical substitution. (†K/ †L) = (MPL /MPK) As previously mentioned, a profit maximising firm will always wish to minimise costs. A budget constraint will signify the fixed sum that a firm can spend on inputs. It is the financial constraint of a firm. Capital can be given a charge of r (per unit bought) and labour can be given a price, w (wage rate per hour). Cost of Production = wL + rK If a firm were to spend its total budget on capital, it could purchase C/r, and similarly, to spend all its funds on labour, C/w could be hired. The slope of the firmsГ‚ financial constraint, or isocost, will hence be w/r, and all other points along the line show the various purchases they could make of the inputs. Criteria: В· An isocost line will give combinations that are equally costly В· A higher isocost line is associated with a larger budget В· The slope is linear and is the negative of the ratio of input prices ( w/r) Diagram Isocost Long run choice of inputs The long run labour demand curve is derived from the isocost isoquant analysis. • 13. Does Economic Globalization Affect Interstate Military... DOES ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION AFFECT INTERSTATE MILITARY CONFLICT? I Although there is still not agreement on a common definition of this phenomenon, in this paper I will accept the one developed by R.M. Joshi (2009). He identifies, indeed, Economic Globalization as the increasing economic integration and interdependence of national, regional and local economies across the world through an intensification of cross border movement of goods, services, technologies and capital There are two good reasons, in my opinion to accept Prof. Joshi s definition. First, it contains two core point affecting every aspect of that phenomena: Interdependence and Cross border movements. Second, it focuses on the interaction among markets avoiding approximate expression often used in public debate as Global Economy and Global Market that could mislead the reader, where national states still play an important role in Economies destinies, many people are not involved in economy, some markets still operate on a local level, transnational corporations are anyway nationally based and we can not (still) talk about a global labour market. (Aspers and Kohl 2011). II The one among trade and peace is an old story. Yet in the XVII century Montesquieu (1758) wrote Peace is the natural effect of trade. Two nations who traffic with each other become reciprocally dependent . Another giant of that time, Immanuel Kant (1795), seems to share this point of view in his Essay on Perpetual Peace. At ... Often, people find their way outside, submerging themselves in the wild, cultivated or not, in order to seek out that offered comfort. Nick does in Earnest Hemingway s Big Two Hearted River. He finds comfort in the ability to just go through the motions, like how Mary Oliver s The Wild Geese offers nature s unconditional acceptance. The assumptions we use to portray a single person or group; are stereotypes. The unreliable generalization about all members of a group that does not recognize individual differences within the group. We will not talk about stereotypes everywhere. Lets narrow the focus down to innercity stereotypes. An inner city is an area inside of a city associated with social and economic problems. For example when we see a news report about a car that has been stolen in the inner city we instantly think a poor raised black man; but why? Well society has told us that if one black man has stolen, then all black men are thieves. On television they advertise welfare and government assistance, but what they show is a poor single parent, who is generally a minority. Society tell us that these stereotypes are what everyone is like, but that is just not the case. I can tell you first hand that the stereotypes about us inner city people are wrong. The Nullification Crisis started in 1828 when the Congress passed a very high tariff on manufactured goods from Europe. The Southerners started protesting against tariffs and called to secede from the United States. Since anger of tariffs continued to build in the South, the Congress passed a new, lower tariff in 1832, hoping that the protest in the South would die down. However, the South Carolinalegislature passed the Nullification act, an act refusing to pay the illegal tariffs of 1828 and 1832. The characters of Guido and Dora Orefice, from the Italian film Life is Beautiful have many differences in their personalities and backgrounds but are very similar in some important ways. They are both strong willed, independent, and have strong family values. Guido is a Jewish man, who is presumably poor because the beginning of the film deals with him attempting to find a job. He eventually finds one as a waiter, which suits his personality because he is the type of person that always wants to please others and make them happy. Despite the prejudice he receives for being Jewish he is a very happy and good humored person. Dora on the other hand, grew up in very different circumstances. She is not Jewish, probably Christian, and is from a fairly wealthy family. She is already engaged to another man, the man who refused Guido a job after he accidentally dropped eggs on his head. She is a somewhat reserved teacher and seems to be a very responsible, well behaved, and compliant woman, until she meets Guido that is. Guido falls in love with her immediately when he meets her. Dora doesn t appear to fall in love as instantaneously as Guido does but she eventually fall for him and she asks him to take her away. • 19. Nuclear Fusion Vs Nuclear Radiation Each atom of a particle element the majority of the time look and behave the same as any other atom of the same element. When comparing two atoms of Carbon for example, they both contain the same number of protons and electrons. In this case the both contain 6 protons. The equal number of protons and neutrons in this atomcreates stability in its nucleus. The two atoms of carbon also have the same mass, approximately 12 amu, but like all things in nature there are exceptions. A different atom of carbon can contain 8 neutrons in its nucleus for every 6 protons. When an atom of an element contains more or less neutrons to protons an unstable environment is now created in the atom which is called a radioactive isotope. The loss of a neutronin the nucleus of an atom emits energy which can also be referred to as radiation. What makes these radioactive isotopes so different between stable atoms is the energy that is released through the loss of the extra neutron in the atom in an attempt to stabilize. This energy that is released in this everyday phenomenon has become quiet helpful as we find uses for it in our everyday lives. Hitchcock utilises birds and taxidermy, the visual motif of eyes, and camera angles to engage his audience and to create suspense. Within the movie Psycho, birds are a prominent motif. The themes of isolation and duality, were emphasized by the use of bird related language, such as Marion s surname being Crane and her being from Phoenix. While dining with Norman in the parlor of the Bates motel, Marion is told by Bates that she eats like a bird , this transitions to Norman stating that he knows a lot about taxidermy and the stuffing of birds, however not so much about how they are when they are alive. Hitchcock suggests the fact that Norman doesn t know how to function normally within society, however indicating he does know how to coexist with his mother . The taxidermy of the birds foreshadows that his mother is in fact stuffed (preserved) and Norman is the one keeping her alive . In both Sweet Sweetback s Baadasssss Song and Do the Right Thing the relationship between blackness and violence fluctuates between a mode of aggression and a tool of survival. Both films consistently attempt to represent violence by blacks as a symptom of white dominance and brutality. In Sweet Sweetback black violence is perceived by the dominant white institutions (i.e. the police and the officers) as an act of intentional aggression. White perception deems that blacks will be violent both physically and sexually because they are naturally violent. It is the responsibility of the whites to protect society from the hypersexual, hyper violent black male (Class Discussions, 2014). Such is the case when police officers storm the hotel room in search of Sweetback only to find a black male naked with a white woman in the bed, presumably after having sex. The officers were quick to physically attack both individuals, though the black man received a longer and harsher punishment. Their response highlights the taboo nature of black and white relations in Sweetback as well as the dominant fear of black males as sexual aggressors who take advantage of white women whenever possible (Class Discussions, 2014). During the study of mycotoxins, Burge s model showed that the majority of mold growth has not developed extensively enough to produce harmful health effects. In the years that followed, many experts challenged that assessment on numerous fronts. The recent anecdotal, medical and analytical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, despite an almost obvious connection, most researchers believe that occupants who spend time in water damaged environments would encounter the poison in too small of an amount to cause symptoms. We do not have research to suggest that anyone has ever been exposed to enough mycotoxin to experience the symptoms. Dave Gallup, chairperson at EMLab, conducted a study where he created a formula to look at the dose needed to cause health effect. In it, he calculated that a person would to live in a hugely water damaged structure for more than 1,000 days before they might reach a level that may cause health issues. Despite the fact that these scientific calculations made sense and other researchers had made similar evaluations, there were still occupants left sickened by water damaged buildings. Nevertheless, as they studied the concepts from the allied fields more closely, they created a better model. There are tubes in your mouth and nose as chemicals get pumped into your system; there s a schedule for you of when you will eat, sleep and get physically tortured. These tortures can vary from being forced to inhale toxic fumes or be fed poison with corrosive chemicals rubbed on your skin and eyes. Imagine living like this for five minutes; now make it a day and now for one whole year. To keep it simple, you re born to be an experiment. You don t have a choice as you were specifically made just to suffer cruel experiments that some don t even have a purpose for the world. This is just a small snippet of how it would feel like if you were an animal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many other remedies that can be done such as blood transfusion and organ transplant. A reason why they would seem animal testing as acceptable is that it would be less cruel to test on a animal than a human. Another argument that disagrees with my point is that animal testing does not benefit humans alone but the animals itself. For example cats are treated with Feline Leukemia and this prolongs the life of domestic animals and wildlife when needed to be treated. From this example it is obvious that animals are also benefitting themselves. Although animals benefit humans and themselves I don t see the problem with testing on one human then thousands of innocent animals, a life is a life so if it s one versus a thousand what is the problem with sacrificing one human that has the same functions as others? Again humans simply choose animals over themselves as animals are viewed to have a lower quality of life, however every life is precious and when we choose to end lives or even our own that does not make you more human or use the excuse of because we are humans and we need to start appreciating life as well as others. Yoder Wise defines conflict as a disagreement in values or beliefs which causes harm or the potential for harm within one s self or with others (Yoder Wise, 2015, p. 432)‌. The most difficult types of conflictto resolve are those due to differing values, opinions, and beliefs among individuals. Another type of conflict is organizational conflict. This type of conflict occurs in healthcare when nursing professionals disagree with institutional policies and procedures (p. 433). When collaborative resolution skills are applied to organizational conflict a significant amount of time is needed for resolution. The most common and most difficult type of conflict is interpersonal conflict. Yoder Wise defines interpersonal conflict as conflict that occurs between or among individuals (p. 433). This type of conflict requires nursing leaders to have strong conflict management skills. Strong leadership skills require the individual to quickly identify conflict so unit dynamics and patient care do not suffer. • 44. State, Political Economy And Governance STATE, POLITICAL ECONOMY AND GOVERNANCE ASSIGNMENT WORK Submitted by: Mohit kumar M.A. (P), SOCW10137 QUESTION: encountering state and citizenship in your everyday life . ANSWER: Definitions of State: Many scholars have defined state in various ways. Even today modern day scholars attempt to define state taking into account its modern functions. In 4th century B.C. Aristotle, who is regarded as `Father of Political Science‟ had defined state. According to him, state is a union of families and villages having for its end a perfect and self sufficing life, by which we mean a happy and honourable life. According to some scholars, this definition is so comprehensive that it can hardly be improved upon. Aristotle‟s definition communicates the primary objectives of the state however we must study some more definitions of the State. Holland: State is a Politically organized people of a definite territory. Prof Woodrow Wilson, `State is a People organized for law within a definite territory.‟Though these two definitions ... • 45. Sigmund Freud s Psychodynamic Theory Sigmund Freud s psychodynamic theory can be described as a view that explains personality in terms of conscious and unconscious forces such as unconscious desires and beliefs (Chegg Study). Sigmund Freud developed this theory in the early 20th century based on the assumption that our unconscious desires influence many of our actions in our everyday lives (McLeod 2009). In addition, another assumption of Freud s that contributed to this theory was that our childhood experiences influence us greatly and make us into the person we are today. Freud proposed the psychodynamic theory according to which personality consisted of the Id, the super ego and the ego (McLeod 2009). The Id is the pleasure principle concerned with instincts and pleasure and operates by primary processes which thereby, does not take into account the reality principle (McLeod 2009). For example, if you were extremely thirsty; instead of going to buy a bottle of water or refilling your own bottle, you would drink from someone else s water bottle without their permission and without them knowing. This example demonstrates how the Id principle operates without taking into account what is socially acceptable in order to satisfy a need. The ego is the reality principle which not only operates by secondary processes concerned with reason and logic, but also mediates between the Id and super ego according to reality (McLeod 2009). For example, in the same scenario, instead of drinking from someone else s water ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. North Korea Autocracy Throughout our entire history there has been a prefered way of command. In the early stages of civilizations, an autocracy was preferred. Now in the Modern Age, Democracy is favored. With more globalization now than there ever was, the normal citizens of the State have more economic influence. Democracy is the worst form of governmenton earth except for all the rest (Winston Churchill) Like Churchill, I also think that Democracyis the prefered type of government for the world we live in today because it leads to more economic growth. Democracy is a type of government where the population of the State votes for the policies. Democratic Government can be a pure Democracy, Republic or any mix of those two. Typically in a Democracy the policies favor the public, like tax proportional to your income. Policies like that often give incentive for innovations and trade, which, leads to growth of the State. Focus on Economicswhen investigating is crucial. Take North Korea for example, they have a absolute monarchy. Due to that and the hostility from the North Korean Government, there is little to no trade with that State. From what we know about North Korea, they are far less medically advanced. Their literacy rate is also lower than similar States like South Korea. With no solid... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Saying that, I do have to say that if the small web of people controlling the government have a positive goal for their future, then there is little harm done. The main difference between Democracy and Oligarchy is that in an Oligarchy there is a higher incentive for the political leaders to favor the policies to the wealthy tip of the ... • 47. Speech And Persuasive Speech When I was in middle school around the sixth grade, a student in my class always picked on me and made me feel embarrassed every time the word was said. The bully would call me that name every time we were near each other or if we had a group and had to chat about a topic. It was completely embarrassing and stressful because it was constant so it was all the time and the bully would never learn because he never cared. So I was always OSTRICH. The dictionary definition of ostrich is a large, two toed, swift footed flightless bird(dictionary.com). And connotations of the word can be hurtful and stressful for most people having to be called a wild animal and if the animal isn t so bright. And it may seem funny to other people but it is just hurtful to try and compare someone s appearance to a wild animal. Why Ostrich is so important as a shameful word is because it is being called a wild, dumb animal and basically is making fun of your body shape as well and words can hurt more then your emotions. According to my source over 44% of women and 15% of men in high school are trying to lose weight because they think they look horrible about their body shapes and effects of this are negative to women especially because they would cut themselves, smoke, drink, or have a eating disorder. Obsessing about your appearance and weight will demonstrate your feelings and opinions about yourself, which tells your teenager that your worth is based on your appearance. That ...
