 Carry information from source to
destination.
 Located below the physical layer.
 Usually free space , metallic cable or
fiber optic.

 Provide a channel from one device to
another.
 Include twisted-pair cable, coaxial
cable, fiber-optic cable.
 Directed and contained by physical
limits of the medium.

 Consists of two conductors.
 If the two wire are parallel ,the effect on
unwanted signal is not the same in both
wires.
 Two types : UTP & STP.

 Carries signals of higher frequency
ranges.
 Coax has central core conductor of solid
wire.
 Enclosed in insulating sheath.

 Light travels In straight line.
 Moving through a single uniform
substance.
 Entering another substance of
different density change ray
direction.

 Transport electromagnetic waves without
using physical conductor.
 Often referred to as wireless communication.

1GHz.
 Propagate in sky mode.
 With low frequencies can
penetrate through walls.

 Ranges from 1GHz & 300GHz.
 A pair of antenna can be aligned .
 Repeaters are needed for long
distances.

 Ranges from 300GHz to 400GHz.
 Used for short range communication.
