INPUT DEVICES An input device is any peripheral used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system. POINTING DEVICES KEYBOARD SCANNER DIGITAL CAMERA
K eyboard A keyboard is a human interface device which is represented as a layout of buttons. Each button, or key, can be used to either input a linguistic character to a computer, or to call upon a particular function of the computer.
P ointing D evices A pointing device is any human interface device that allows a user to input spatial data to a computer. MOUSE JOYSTICK TRACKBALL
M ouse A mouse is a pointing device that functions by detecting two-dimensional motion relative to its supporting surface. Physically, a mouse consists of an object held under one of the user's hands, with one or more buttons.
J oystick A joystick is an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and reports its angle or direction to the device it is controlling. Joysticks are often used to control video games, and usually have one or more push-buttons whose state can also be read by the computer.
T rackball A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes—like an upside-down mouse with an exposed protruding ball. The user rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the palm of the hand to move a cursor.
S canner A scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image.
D igital C amera A digital camera, as opposed to a film or video camera, uses an electronic sensor to transform images (or video) into electronic data. Modern digital cameras are typically multifunctional and the same device can take photographs, video, and/or sound.
PROCESS CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT/ PROCESSOR MICROPROCESSOR
C entral P rocessing U nit The Central Processing Unit (CPU) or processor is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, and is the primary element carrying out the computer's functions.
M icroprocessor A microprocessor incorporates most or all of the functions of a central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit. (IC).
STORAGE HARD DRIVE FLOPPY DRIVE REMOVABLE HARD DISK CD-ROM DRIVE
H ard D rive A hard disk drive (often shortened as hard disk, hard drive, or HDD) is a non-volatile storage device that stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces.
F loppy D rive A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell.
R emovable H ard D isk A type of disk drive system in which hard disks are enclosed in plastic or metal cartridges so that they can be removed like floppy disks . Removable disk drives combine the best aspects of hard and floppy disks. They are nearly as capacious and fast as hard disks and have the portability of floppy disks. Their biggest drawback is that they're relatively expensive.
CD-ROM D rive is a pre-pressed compact disc that contains data accessible to, but not writable by, a computer for data storage and music playback, the 1985 “Yellow Book” standard developed by Sony and Philips adapted the format to hold any form of binary data .
OUTPUT DEVICES An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by an information processing system to the outside world. MONITOR PRINTER SPEAKER
M onitor A monitor or display (sometimes called a visual display unit) is a piece of electrical equipment which displays images generated by devices such as computers, without producing a permanent record. The monitor comprises the display device, circuitry, and an enclosure.
P rinter A printer is a peripheral which produces a hard copy (permanent readable text and/or graphics) of documents stored in electronic form, usually on physical print media such as paper or transparencies.
S peaker Computer speakers, or multimedia speakers, are external speakers, commonly equipped with a low-power internal amplifier.
