Knowing the Different Types of Film Genre PREPARED BY MS. MARICEL C. MALLARI DPS HS COMPUTER TEACHER A.Y. 2011-2012 THIRD QUARTER
Definition of Terms FILM - also called a  movie  or  motion picture , is a series of still or moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. STORY - The word "story" may be used as a synonym of "narrative", but can also be used to refer to the sequence of events, characters, and action represented within a given setting of time and place, or a world of cause and effect, as described in a narrative. FILMMAKING - (often referred to in an academic context as film production) is the process of making a film, from an initial story, idea, or commission, through scriptwriting, casting, shooting, directing, editing, and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a theatrical release or television program. NARRATIVE - A narrative is a constructive format (as a work of speech, writing, song, film, television, video games, photography or theatre) that describes a sequence of fictional or non-fictional events. NARRATIVE ELEMENTS SETTING - Where the story takes place; usually every scene has a change of setting. CHARACTER - Description of the character and a little of their background. PLOT - The series of events that unfold in the story. MOOD – Emotional Tone of the story. Conflict - The struggle between two opposing Forces. Climax - The strongest part of the story, where the conflict builds up to the emotional peak. Resolution - Where the conflict is resolved. En.wikipedia.org
FILM GENRE In time, the different kinds of approaches to making stories have become familiar and recurring. They fall into patterns that we recognize right away. Thus, stories that have well-known conventions, tropes, and other similar qualities are categorized into a group. These are what we know as GENRES. En.wikipedia.org
FILM GENRE In film theory,  genre  refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. - Wikipedia.org
CATEGORIZING FILMS
CATEGORIZING FILMS A movie, like any story, can be comprised of many elements which we distinguish and categorize into groups called film genres. Films can be categorized in a dizzying number of ways. But for practical purposes, they are categorized between the following:
7 PRACTICAL QUESTIONS What is the purpose of the movie? How is movie rated? What is the type of the movie? What is the visual presentation of the movie? What is the quality of the movie? How long the movie will be played? Is there a basis in reality?
MOVIE PURPOSE MESSAGE OR PROPAGANDA Propaganda films may be packaged in numerous ways, but are most often documentary-style productions or fictional screenplays, that is produced to convince the viewer of a certain political point or influence the opinions or behavior of the viewer, often by providing subjective content that may be deliberately misleading. http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda_film Fahrenheit 9/11 is a 2004 documentary film by American filmmaker and political commentator Michael Moore. The film takes a critical look at the presidency of George W. Bush, the War on Terror, and its coverage in the news media. The film is the highest grossing documentary of all time.
MOVIE PURPOSE POPCORN OR PURELY ENTERTAINMENT
RATINGS MPAA - The  Motion Picture Association of America's film-rating system  is used in the U.S. and its territories to rate a film's thematic and content suitability for certain audiences. The MPAA system applies only to motion pictures that are submitted for rating. Other media (such as television programs and video games) may be rated by other entities.
TYPE OF MOVIES LOCAL / DOMESTIC VS. FOREIGN
VISUAL PRESENTATION 2D VS. 3D OR STEREOSCOPIC - refers to a technique for creating or enhancing the illusion of depth in an image by presenting two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. Both of these 2-D offset images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth. Three strategies have been used to accomplish this: have the viewer wear eyeglasses to combine separate images from two offset sources, have the viewer wear eyeglasses to filter offset images from a single source separated to each eye, or have the lightsource split the images directionally into the viewer's eyes
MOVIE QUALITY A-LIST (higher budget, mainstream) VS. B-LIST TO Z-LIST (lower budget, more experimental)
MOVIE LENGTH FULL-LENGTH (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the American Film Institute, and the British Film Institute all define a feature as a film with a running time of 40 minutes or longer.) VS. SHORT (the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits")
BASIS IN REALITY FICTIONAL (Fiction is the form of any narrative or informative work that deals, in part or in whole, with information or events that are not factual, but rather, imaginary—that is, invented by the author. VS. NON-FICTIONAL (Non-fiction is the form of any account, narrative, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are understood to be fact. This presentation may be accurate or not—that is, it can give either a true or a false account of the subject in question—however, it is generally assumed that authors of such accounts believe them to be truthful at the time of their composition or, at least, pose them to their audience as historically or empirically true.)
CURRENT EVENTS ON MOVIE PRACTICE IN THE PHILIPPINES (ADDITIONAL INFORMATION)

THE USE OF THE X RATINGS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTRCB A movie shall be disapproved for public viewing if, in the judgment of the board: The average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the dominant theme of the work as a whole appeals to prurient interest and satisfies only the craving for gratuitous sex and/or violence. The work depicts in a patently lewd, offensive, or demeaning manner, excretory functions and sexual conduct such as sexual intercourse, masturbation and exhibition of the genitals. The work clearly constitutes an attack against any race, creed or religion. The work condones or encourages the use of illegal drugs and substances. The work tends to undermine the faith and confidence of the people in their government and/or duly constituted authorities. The work glorifies criminals or condones crimes. The work is libelous or defamatory to the good name and reputation of any person, whether living or dead. A movie or television program that receives an X rating may not be shown in Philippine theaters or television, or in any form of public exhibition.
RADIO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTRCB The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP; English: Association of Broadcasters of the Philippines), an association unrelated to the government, governs censorship on radio, although it can only reprimand its own members. A network currently not a member of the KBP is GMA Network, who is a former member.
