spiritual), and goals that guide the client’s choices
or decisions.
Value
Value means: One‘s principles or standards; one‘s
judgment of what is valuable or important in life.
Values have been defined as ideals or beliefs that a
person holds good or bad and desirable or
undesirable
Values consist of beliefs and attitudes, which are

related, but not equal, to values
A value set
Avalue set is Individual “list” of values. It gives
direction for life and forms a basis for behavior
Is the small group of values held by an individual.

direction to life, and form the basis of behavior
especially behavior that is based on decisions or
choices.
The value system of a group of people is the set of
beliefs and attitudes that they all share.

 Aculture contains setsof values, beliefs, and habits learned during
socialization, which shape the worlds of ideas, perception,
decisions, and howindividuals act.
 Each caregiver carries his or her ownset of cultural values into the
caringinteraction
 Although the professional work of nurses is representative of the
global nursing culture, some activities reflect unique values and
traditions that are rooted in nurses’original culture.
A Cultural Perspective
 Cultural Competence: Nurses should be culturally competent
 Respect for Diversity: Nurses should respect and value the cultural
diversity of their patients

Cognitive(thinking): this involves a person’s belief / knowledge
about an attitude object. For example: “I believe spiders are
dangerous”.
Affective(feeling): This involves a person’s feelings / emotions
about the attitude object. For example: “I am scared of spiders”.

influences on how we act or behave. For example: “I will avoid

response of an individual or group to its
environment.
Behavior is the result of a person’s values,

Examples: Lost or missing medical notes,
information missed off a prescription and poor
handovers.
Values clarification plays a major role in resolving
dilemmas.

weeks pregnant. She has a history of cardiac disease that has
get worse because of the pregnancy. Mehwish's doctor is
concerned that continuing the pregnancy can cause her heart
condition to worsen and could result in a life-threatening
emergency. He has recommended termination of the
pregnancy within the next two weeks. Mehwish is unwilling,
stating that, although she does not currently go to church, she
was raised to believe abortion is wrong and believes God will
