There are 4 main types of
if sentences in English,
often called conditional sentences.
• These sentences are in two halves (clauses):
• the if part (if clause)
• the other part where you can use words
such as can, will, may, might, could and
would (main clause)
If I am late for school,
my teacher gets angry.

If + Present simple Present simple
If I oversleep …
I miss the bus.
If I miss the bus, I am late for school.
If I am late for school, my teacher gets angry.
If I go to London,
I will see the Big Ben.

If + Present tense will / can / may / must + verb

If I go to Buckingham Palace,
I can take a photo of the Royal Guard.
If you go to London,
you must look right before crossing a street

If I were an astronaut,

If I travelled in a spaceship,
I would go to Mars.

Make Zero Conditional sentences, use
cues.
• Jane / eat / too much chocolate /
she /get / sick
• You / not / eat / you / die
• You / heat / ice / it / melts
Write 2nd Conditional sentences, put
the verbs in brackets in correct form.
• If you _______________ (leave) your job,
you ________________ (travel) around the
world.
• If you _____________ (be) nicer to him, he
____________________(lend) you the
money.
• It _________________(be) nice if the rain
____________________(stop)!
Write 3rd Conditional sentences, put
the verbs in brackets in correct order.
• He crashed his car, because he fell asleep while
driving. If he _____________(fall) asleep while
driving, he ________________ (crash) his car.
• I lost my job because I was late for work. I
________ (loose) my job if I ___________ (be)
late for work.
• We couldn't go to the concert, because we didn't
have enough money. If we ____________ (have)
enough money, we _________ (go)to the concert.
