What is a Conjunction?
A conjunction is like glue. It helps words
to stick together.

There are 3 types of conjunctions
• Coordinating conjunctions
• Correlative conjunctions
• Subordinating conjunctions

Let’s look at the 3rd and final type of
conjunction:
Subordinating Conjunctions

Common Subordinating Conjunctions:
after
although
as
as soon as
because
before
by the time
even if
even though
every time
if
in case
in order to
now that
once
provided that
rather than
since
so that
than
that
the first time
though
unless
until
when
whenever
where
whereas
wherever
whether or not
while
why

Here is an example of a sentence with
a subordinating conjunction:
We looked in the metal canister
where Ginger often hides her
candy.

Use a subordinating conjunction
when there is a main (independent)
clause and a subordinate (dependent)
clause.
MAIN subordinate

The subordinate conjunction has two
jobs:
First, it provides a necessary transition
between the two ideas in the sentence.
This transition will indicate a time,
place, or cause and effect relationship.

Louisa will go outside to play
once her spelling homework is
done.

We looked on top of the
refrigerator where Jenny will
often hide a bag of chocolate
chip cookies.

Because her teeth were
chattering in fear, Linda
clenched her jaw muscle while
waiting for her turn to audition.

The second job of the subordinate
conjunction is to reduce the
importance of one clause so that a
reader understands which of the
two ideas is more important.

The more important idea belongs in the
main clause, and the less important idea
is in the clause that is introduced by the
subordinate conjunction.
Main clause + conj. + subordinate clause.
or
Conj. + subordinate clause, + main clause.

Example:
As Sherri blew out the candles
on her birthday cake, she
caught her hair on fire.
Which is the important clause
(independent) and which is the
less important clause
(subordinating)?

“she caught her hair on fire” is
the important clause.
“As Sherri blew out the candles
on her birthday cake” is less
important, so it is introduced by
the conjunction “as”.

Example:
We looked in the metal
canister where Ginger often
hides her candy.
Which is the important clause (independent)
and which is the less important clause
(subordinating)?

“We looked in the metal
canister” is the important
clause.
“where Ginger often hides her
candy” is less important, so it is
introduced by the conjunction
“where”.

Example:
Sara begins to sneeze
whenever she opens the
window to get a breath of fresh
air.

(subordinating)?

Example:
When the doorbell rang, my
dog went berserk.
less important clause (subordinating)?

How do you know when to use
a comma in a sentence with a
subordinating conjunction?

If the sentence starts with the
subordinating conjunction, you
need a comma at the end of the
subordinate clause.

Example:
I worked my fingers to the bone
while you slept!
While you slept, I worked my
fingers to the bone!

Example:
I’ll go to sleep as soon as I
finish these dishes.
As soon as I finish these dishes,
I’ll go to sleep.

Example:
We eat at Cracker Barrel
whenever we can.
Whenever we can, we eat at
Cracker Barrel.

Choose the appropriate subordinating conjunction to complete
each sentence.

Directions: On a sheet of paper, rewrite the
given sentence so it begins with the
subordinate clause.

Remember the comma!

“Rather than” means about the
same thing as “instead of”.
Ex: Instead of pizza, let’s have
