Acknowledging the situation
• As educators in the College of Education at the University of Missouri-
St. Louis we recognize the tragedy and confusion surrounding the
events in Ferguson, MO.
• We realize that many in our community are directly impacted by these
events. We also recognize our role as mentors, leaders and role models
for current and future educators and counselors in the metro-St. Louis
area and nation-wide.
• When tragedy strikes our community, we believe educators and those
who work in education are often on the front-line in not only
responding to events but in the longer term process of educating
people about the history and context in which the event emerged.
• In this way, we see education as a process that can help create more
caring, critical and democratic citizens and communities.

Guidelines for faculty
We Believe
(1) Being silent about the issue sends the message that education – and the
classroom – is not the place to address important public sphere issues. We
encourage all faculty and staff to check in with students as appropriate.
(2) Culturally responsive and multicultural educators recognize they do not
have all of the answers but are committed to educating themselves about
the complexity of the issues. In this case, racism, classism, freedom of the
press, and militarization of police forces in black communities are some of
the intersecting issues.
(3) Some students may want to further discuss what has happened/ is
happening in Ferguson. Listening to student concerns with an open and
empathic stance will be important during this time of crisis. UMSL can
provide resources and referrals for counseling and other support services
right here on campus for students who are exhibiting signs of stress and
trauma and/or needing extra support. The Counseling Center in the

What can we do?
• Earn your voice with communities starting today
• Acknowledge an incident even when it is tough
• Create space for those impacted to be heard
• Check-in with your privilege – constantly
• Understand your tolerance for disruption and
change
• Integrate the reality of the situation – openly and
honestly – into your teaching
• Problem-pose as a teaching methodology
