Converting from
RSView32 to
FactoryTalk View SE
FTALK-SP009A-EN-P
Does this mean RSView32 is going away?
• No, RSView32 (including ADS) will be supported as long as 32-bit operating systems
are available.
• RSView32 v7.60 does provide support for Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit.
• However, we have no plans to support 64-bit operating systems so now is the time to
develop a migration plan.
Benefits of migrating to FactoryTalk View SE
• Continued support of latest Microsoft operating systems.
• Eliminates requirement for ‘specialized’ IT support lowering Total Cost of Ownership.
• Allows you to take advantage of latest new features and data sharing within Rockwell’s
Integrated Architecture core products, such as FactoryTalk Historian and AssetCentre.
• For more information see slides 4 thru 6.

– Add up to 40 languages
– Runtime language switching
– Individual client settings
– Tool tips too!
• FactoryTalk Alarms & Events
– RSView32 HMI alarms can be converted to FactoryTalk Alarms & Events alarms that support runtime
language switching (Use Conversion Tool on Rockwell Automation Knowledgebase – AID 45583 -
Tool: Converting ViewSE HMI Alarms to FactoryTalk A&E Tag-based Alarms)
– New and improved controls - Status Explorer, Summary, Banner, Log Viewer – that are highly
configurable and offer more extensive alarming control
– Open SQL history database
• Remote editing for network Applications
• Edit application on-line (graphics and tags)

• Client-side VBA stored and executed on a per-screen, per-client basis
– FactoryTalk View SE object model exposes the graphical objects
– Client-specific calculation or animation
• Security enhancements with FactoryTalk Security
– Configure your security once for all FactoryTalk-enabled products
– Full integration with FactoryTalk Asset Centre
– able to use Windows users and/or Windows domain groups to assign access rights

FactoryTalk View SE Benefits

Most of the basic functionality of the RSView32 application converts to FactoryTalk View SE
without issue, but there still are some considerations to handle the components that do not
convert.
These components may require a little reworking or manual conversion work to get similar
or improved functionality.
• Startup configuration (SE Client setup)
– The Startup configuration in RSView32 must manually be converted to a FactoryTalk
View SE Client startup file.
• Communication configuration (RSLinx Data Server and shortcut)
– The RSLinx or OPC server shortcut must be added and redefined in RSLinx
Enterprise as Topics.
• RSView32 native trend objects are not converted.
– However, TrendX ActiveX trend objects are converted.
• HMI Alarm Summary object must be updated manually.
– Display only
RSView32 Conversion Considerations
Copyright © 2012 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All rights reserved. 7
• FactoryTalk View SE implements client-side VBA, but not server-side VBA
– The VBA project from RSView32 will not migrate to FactoryTalk View SE.
– VBA code can be copied and reused in FactoryTalk View SE. Check your code, it may need
to be redesigned for use within FactoryTalk View SE.
– FactoryTalk View SE Client Object Model - See help files OR AID: 30478 View SE Client
Object Model
– AID 51770 - Sample VBA: Exercise in migrating a View32 application with VBA to ViewSE
• RSView32 HMI users are not converted to FactoryTalk users.
– Users and security setups must be manually configured in the new FactoryTalk View SE
application, but FactoryTalk Users and Groups allows for more flexibility.
– HMI tag system/user is replaced by FactoryTalk View SE function CurrentUserName()
• Client-side events are executed on the server in FactoryTalk View SE.
– FactoryTalk View SE executes all commands generated by an event on the server.
• Tag Monitor and Command Line Object are not supported on FactoryTalk View SE
displays.
RSView32 Conversion Considerations

• Some RSView32 extensions not directly supported, but equivalents exist:
– RSView32 Messenger  Specter Instruments Win-911®
– RSView32 RecipePro  future - RecipePlus available for SE
– RSView32 SPC  FactoryTalk Historian SE with FactoryTalk VantagePoint
– RSView32 WebServer  FactoryTalk ViewPoint
– Project Documenter  Application Documenter
• RSView32 Language String Substitution: Translated strings are not converted.
• Tag-based licensing (RSView32) vs. screen-based licensing (FactoryTalk View
SE)
