What is Race?
Race refers to a person or person’s physical characteristics: like bone structure, skin, hair, or eye color.
Some examples of race are having brown, white or black skin.
Your race is determined by how you look.
What is Race?
Over the past couple of years, genetic research has revealed that all humans are closely related. More
closely related than all chimps.
Everyone has the same collection of genes, the only exceptions are identical twins .
Our species, which is Homo sapiens evolved in Africa.
What is Race?
Different Types of Race are:
Caucasian- Aryans, Hamites, and Sermites
Monolian- Northern Mongolian, Chinese and Indo-Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Tibetan, Malayan,
Polynesian, Maori, Micronesian, Eskimo, and American Indian.
Negroid- African, Hottentots, Melanesians/Papua, “Negrito”, Australian Aborigine, Dravidians, Sinhalese.
Different Types Of Race
The standards for races are they have five
categories for data on race and two categories for
date on ethnicity.
What is Race?
Race as a term refers to the concept of dividing people into populations, or into groups on the basis of
having various sets of physical characteristics. These usually are generated from your ancestry.
Race assumes that you have shared biological traits, whether or not they are actual or asserted. In early
19th century, racial differences were put in different areas. Not by color or by facial features.
Categorized race is the result from shared genealogy, due to having geographical isolation. In today’s
society, we have broken that down into having mixed groups.
Different Types of Race
Long ago race was not determined by skin color.
Race was determined by social class, if you lived in
rural or urban areas, and if you were a believe or
non believer of Christ. People did not base race on
the color of people's skin or on where they came
from until A.D.
Different Types of Race
There are five different categories of race.
1. American Indian or Alaska Native
2. Asian
3. Black or African American
4. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
5. White
Different Types of Race
There are two ethnicity categories of race
1. Non-Resident Alien
2. Race and Ethnicity Unknown
What Does Race Have to do With Society?
● Society is defined as people who live in a specific geographic territory, interact with one another,
and share many elements of common culture. Within a society there are many components that
make up that society. There is crime, culture, social class, gender, marriage and the family, religion,
education, medicine and health care, the political order, etc. However, race and ethnicity has a
great and powerful influence in society, and has for many years.
What Does Race Have to do With Society?
● When looking at race and ethnicity from a sociologist point of view, it is very easy to see how much
influence it truly has on societies as a whole all over the world. One of the main things that people
think about with race and ethnicity is the inequalities that are associated with it. The different
sociological perspectives analyze the inequalities of race and ethnicity.
What Does Race Have to do With Society?
● The Functionalist views racial and ethnic inequality as having a specific function in society. “The
main function of ethnic and racial inequality is to ensure the unpleasant but important work gets
done” (Curry, Jiobu, Schwirian, 232)
● The Functionalist theorist of sociology feels that the racial and ethnic minorities have very little
job skills. They also feel that every society has jobs that are undesirable to the people in that
society. The jobs that give low pay, have poor working conditions, and have little prestige. The
minorities don’t have the means to compete for the high paying, desirable jobs, therefore they
have to settle for the undesirable jobs.
○ For example, Asian immigrants are working in sweatshops and Mexican immigrants act as
maids, gardeners, and field hands. That is the function that racial and ethnic inequalities play
in society.
What Does Race Have to do With Society?
● Many examples of the inequality of race and ethnicity can be found from studying the United
States of America’s society. The most notable and highly memorable example is the treatment of
African Americans in the United States. Americans started out treating the African Americans very
poor and very disrespectfully. They showed clear prejudice and discrimination towards these
people. This was shown during the period of African American slavery in the United States.
How Race Affects the Workplace
Some companies fail to realize the importance of having a racially and ethnically diverse workplace. Many
factors such as prejudice and stereotypes towards people of different race and ethnicities, can lead to
discriminatory actions. These actions can begin during the hiring process whether they’re intentional or not.
How Race Affects the Workplace
Diversity in a workplace is important. Diversity allows individuals to feel comfortable in their work
environment. It will also benefit the workplace because if the employee is happy, they’ll take pride in
their job. Productions levels will be high as a result. The consumers will also feel comfortable in a diverse
environment. They will not feel out of place.
How Race Affects the Workplace
Race will negatively affect the company’s success if the job requires collaborations and teamwork.
Individuals will delay group progress if they don’t have faith in the abilities their coworkers have to offer
due to racism. Discrimination can prevent the victim from asking for help or offering help. They’ll isolate
themselves.
How Race Affects the Workplace
Allowing racist behavior can create legal tension within the company. The person affected by the
behaviors can sue the organization. HR staff can also be affected if fair policies aren’t enforced. Lawsuits
can ruin the business leaving multiple people without a job.
Contrasting Race
White Race :
● White people is a racial
classification specifier, used
mostly and often exclusively for
people of European descent.
African American race
● Black people is a term used in certain
countries, often in socially based
systems of racial classification or of
ethnicity, to describe persons who are
perceived to be dark-skinned
compared to other populations.
Contrasting Race: related to aspects of future planning
White Race:
● Going to college and have a well rounded
good job.
Latino race:
● Studies including only Latino adolescents
have found that youth report academic
future expectations more than any other
type
Contrasting Race: the aspects of expectations
White & Black Race:
● White students reporting higher education
expectations more often than students of
color.
Latino race:
● Results demonstrate that Latino youth
were less likely to picture themselves
attending college when compared to
Black and White youth, and more likely
to hold social goals, such as starting
their own family.
Contrasting Race: related to aspects of industry
White Race:
● A lot of them didn’t work for people,
they might of had there own
business.
Black Race:
● Black women received half the
wages the white women earned.
