What is copyright?
• Copyright is a legal concept which grants
creators(authors, musicians, artists and other
creators) the right of ownership and protection
against unauthorized uses of their works for a fixed
period.
• It provide a protection for personal interests called
moral rights and attempts to balance exclusive rights
of copyright holders with the interests of society at
large by providing a number of exceptions and
limitations.
History of copyright
• Copyright is developed in British common law from the
Statute of Queen Anne 1710 An Act for the Encouragement
of Learning.
• It was purposely introduced to promote learning to
encourage men to compose and write useful books.
• Copyright law was introduced to limit the rights of the
previous monopoly of control.
Rights and protections
• Economic rights to restrict reproduction, distribution and
adaptations of the work.
• Moral rights relating to interests which are not financial or
monetary.
• Related rights to protect person other than the authors who
are involved in the dissemination of copyrighted works.
• Transfer of rights in regard to assignment of rights, licensing
and transfer of rights.
Three reasons for copyright protection
1. You work is an asset as people can use for financial
collateral
2. Protect you rights so that no one is infringe your
copyright
3. Licensing is the way forward which is the effective
way to increase the legal protection.
What is creative commons?
• Creative commons is a license which specifies the author’s
conditions regarding the baseline permissions of
reproduction distribution, display, and performance.
• Creative commons work within copyright law.
• It allows creators to grant permission to everyone to use
their work in certain ways.
Six types of creative commons
• Attribution (CC-BY)
• Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA)
• Attribution-Non-Commercial (CC-BY-NC)
• Attribution-No Derivatives (CC-BY-ND)
• Attribution-Non-Commercial-ShareAlike (CC-BY-NC-SA)
• Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)
Attribution
• The license allows reusers to:
- distribute
-remix
- adapt
-build upon the material in any medium or format
• The license allows for commercial use
• Credit must be given to the creator.
Attribution ShareAlike
• Adaptations must be shared under the same terms
• Credit must be given to the creator
• The license allows reusers to:

• Allows for commercial use
Attribution Non Commercial
• Only noncommercial uses of work are permitted
