What is copyright? • Copyright is a legal concept which grants creators(authors, musicians, artists and other creators) the right of ownership and protection against unauthorized uses of their works for a fixed period. • It provide a protection for personal interests called moral rights and attempts to balance exclusive rights of copyright holders with the interests of society at large by providing a number of exceptions and limitations.

History of copyright • Copyright is developed in British common law from the Statute of Queen Anne 1710 An Act for the Encouragement of Learning. • It was purposely introduced to promote learning to encourage men to compose and write useful books. • Copyright law was introduced to limit the rights of the previous monopoly of control.

Rights and protections • Economic rights to restrict reproduction, distribution and adaptations of the work. • Moral rights relating to interests which are not financial or monetary. • Related rights to protect person other than the authors who are involved in the dissemination of copyrighted works. • Transfer of rights in regard to assignment of rights, licensing and transfer of rights.
