Characterization
Plot Setting
Characterization
Characterization is the
description of a character’s
physical traits (how a character
looks), point of view, personality,
private thoughts, and actions.
Two types of characterization:
 Indirect characterization
 Direct characterization
Characterization
Direct Characterization: The
writer tells the reader about
the character’s personality
using the narrator of the story,
another character, or the main
character revealing aspects
about himself/herself.
Characterization
Indirect Characterization: The writer reveals
to the reader what the character’s personality
through the thoughts, feeling, and actions of
the character. The writer can do this in several
ways:
 Describing the appearance of the character
 Describing the character’s
actions/reactions/behavior
 Revealing what the character is thinking, such as
stream of consciousness or interior monologue
 Using dialogue
 Describing the reactions of other characters
Characterization
A character is a person, or sometimes an
animal, who takes part in the action of a short
story or other literary work.
Characters and how we get to know them:
• Through the author’s physical description
of them
• Through their actions
• Through their words (dialogue)
• Through their inner thoughts
• Through what other characters say and
think about them
Characterization
Plot Setting
Setting
Setting
Setting is the time and place
that a story occurs.
Authors often use
descriptions of landscape,
scenery, buildings, seasons or
weather to provide a strong
sense of setting.
