Static Characters A static character does not undergo important change in the course of the story, remaining essentially the same at the end as he or she was at the beginning. Ex: Carl in "Black Holes and Basketball Sneakers" is a static character, he starts off trying to recruit Malik for the Bullets and continues to want that throughout the entire story Ex: The Joker in  Batman  is a static character, he is a homicidal maniac throughout the entire story Mini-Lesson: Static and Dynamic Characters (Notes in  Red )

The changes they go through are not changes in circumstances (like getting older moving somewhere new) INSTEAD they are changes  within  the character in question: such as changes in understanding  of  circumstances, or changes in commitment or value values. Ex: Malik is a dynamic character because he changes from being selfish to worrying about someone else. Ex: A thug who finds Jesus and becomes super religious  and gives up a violent life to become a preacher
