The researcher, Dr. Edward Taub, had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys' fingers, hands, arms, and legs, a process called "deafferentation," so that they could not feel them. He then deafferented their entire spinal column. He used restraint, electric shock, and withholding of food and water to force the monkeys to use the deafferented parts of their bodies. Peter Benenson,  an English labour lawyer was travelling in the London Underground on 19 November 1960, when he read of two Portuguese students who had been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment for having drunk a toast to liberty.
