Creating successful OER
institutional initiatives with
big impact
MEASURE OUTCOMES, NOT ACTIONS
2
Outcomes. Measure success by these!
• # of faculty using OER
• # of students impacted by OER
• $ amount of savings to students
• Student success (grades, completion, etc.)
Actions that contribute to, but don’t equal success
• Holding a meeting
• Having a workshop
• # of people who attended meeting/workshop
• Having a display
Focus on scale
Start with easy wins to
impact students now
We = not me
(designate a leader)
HAVE A LEADER, INCLUDE EVERYONE
6
• Faculty
• Administrators
• Librarians
• Instructional Support
• Bookstore
• Disability Services
• Students
• …everyone!
Institutional
Initiative
Strategies
You must complete at
least 8 direct
approaches to be
successful
Expressed support from
administration
Presentations during
department meetings
Ask faculty directly to pilot
the books
Promote “Textbook Heroes”
and ask them to promote
OER
Let’s work together!
2015-2015 increase in impact with
OpenStax at partner schools:
35,239 additional students impacted
$3.47 million additional savings
Steps Toward a Successful
OER Initiative
at
Central New Mexico
Community College
“Changing Lives,
Building Community”
CNM
• Largest undergraduate institution in New Mexico:
• ± 27,000 students across multiple campuses
• Most students belong to a minority group:
• ± half of our students are Hispanic
• Avg student age = 27 years
• 1,100 faculty:
• 350 FT : 750 PT
• NM has 20 % poverty rate:
• average income in mid 40K’s

I Learn about Free Textbooks
• From colleagues:
• They call my attention to the OpenStax
website.
• They report on their experience piloting
OpenStax books at faculty meeting.
• By attending OpenStax Conference at
Rice University
2014 OpenStax Conference (CNX)
• Dean and VP of Academic Affairs support and fund my
request to attend CNX Conference.
• Debates on:
• Cost of textbooks, student debts, student dropout
• Sustainability of OER and its challenges
• Challenges of implementing OER
• Presentations on:
• Research on how students study and learn
• OER software based on this research
• I recommend the OpenStax A&P books to my
students as:
• a second textbook
• a more portable book
• an easily accessible and searchable book
• I use OpenStax images in my lecture
presentations

CNM invites OpenStax
• Faculty recommend to our VP of
Academic Affairs and President that we
invite OpenStax to CNM
• OpenStax presents on Faculty Focus Day
• VP appoints me as contact person for
OpenStax and other OER
I become OER Leader
• I create OER lists for all faculty:
• For as many subjects as possible
• Update list every few months
• Peaks faculty’s interest
• OpenStax in Library:
• OpenStax books are added to our Digital Library
• Librarians help inform students of free OpenStax textbooks
By thewizardplusplus: Creative Commons Zero 1.0 Public
Domain License Creative Commons Zero 1.0 Public Domain
Educate Faculty about CC Licenses
• Faculty had many inquiries about Creative Commons
licenses:
• Faculty member offers workshop on how to access and
use CC BY content.
• Librarian presents on various copyright types on Faculty
Focus Day.
• Librarian becomes appointed Copyright Specialist
and, to this day, continues to educate faculty
about copyrights. Crucial!
• iPad Workshops:
• Provide perfect opportunities to introduce faculty to
free digital textbooks.
• Mobile device use is rampant!!
• Students and faculty expect easy access to
textbooks and other resources via mobile phones,
tablets and laptops.

I Educate Administration
• Important to inform/educate all levels of
administration about OER:
• Distance Learning Director
• Chairs' Council
• Deans’ Council
• All VPs
• College President
By GDJ: Creative Commons Zero 1.0 Public Domain License
Creative Commons Zero 1.0 Public Domain License
Campus Bookstore
• Check in with your bookstore
and its legalities.
• You may need help from other
colleges to learn best
procedure.

License Creative Commons Zero 1.0 Public Domain License
President's Message
• President clearly announces to all
faculty that college officially supports
use of OER in courses and why.
• Stresses that use of OER is optional
for faculty.

Spread the Word!
• Offer interview about OER Initiative to:
• College Paper
• Marketing Department:
• Request for interview to be published on public college website
• Educate parents/grandparents/friends about
OER:
• Provide OpenStax link as well as other OER links.
Make Adoption Easier
• Encourage faculty to become reviewers and
editors:
• If a colleague has reviewed a book, we tend to be
more open to adopt that book.
• Our Faculty Senate has adjusted instructions
for textbook adoption to be OER inclusive.
Lead by Example!
• Our adoption rate increased from 2.5
% to 12.2 % in less than 1 year!
• Number of our adoptions is still going
up, especially in sciences.
• > 20 faculty in > 30 courses

Join the Global OER Initiative
• Because of the OER initiative at CNM:
• textbooks are instantaneously available to
students and on any mobile device
• our students have saved thousands of dollars
• Our goal is to continue doing so…
• You can too!
