What is Creative Commons? Creative Commons provides free legal tools that let authors, scientists, artists, and educators easily mark their creative work with the freedoms they want it to carry.

Copyright Basics: A bundle of rights The right to publish the work The right to copy the work The right to prepare derivative works The right to display or perform the work The right to license any of the above to third parties Copyright exists from the moment of creation, and lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years.

Why Creative Commons? Copyright happens automatically Copyright lasts from the moment a work is created until 70 years after the death of the creator.  Copyright comes with several rights, and creators may not want or need all of them.
 
The Creative Commons Licenses A spectrum of rights
Mix and Match Licenses Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike No Derivative Works Creators combine the different elements to create a license that suits their needs, and tells you what you can and can’t do with their work.
