Surname history 'Crocker,  Cruwys , and Coplestone, When the Conqueror came, were at home.'   1166 Ottuel  de Crues  held half a fee at Cruwys Morchard, Devon, from Oliver de Tracy of Barnstaple  Cruwyses  have been Lords of the Manor of Cruwys Morchard continuously from c.1200 to the present Cruwys  family records (c. 2500 documents including manor rolls) dating back to 13th century still held at Cruwys Morchard House c.1200 Richard  de Cruwes  and Alexander  de Cruwes  signed the Tracy Deed, earliest document in collection
 
 
Surname evolution Cruwys  spelling stabilised from 1684 onwards in Cruwys Morchard parish registers and from early 1800s elsewhere. Variants in parish registers and medieval documents include: Creuse, Crews, Crewse, Crues, Cruis,  Cruse , Crusse, Cruwes, Cruze, Cruys Cruse  spelling stabilised from 1800s onwards. Evolved from Crewes, Crews, Cruce, Crues, Crouse, Cruise, Cruse, Curs, Curse Cruse  changed to Scruse in one Wiltshire line In the US Crew became Crews/ Cruse . Crews evolved to Screws/Scruse. Germanic Gr ü ss Anglicised to  Cruse .
