“Ask elementary students if they like mathematics and
many of them will say that they do. But something
happens in middle school, and students begin to dislike
                     mathematics.” p.176

 Principles and Standards for School Mathematics
        The equity principle
        The curriculum principle
        The teaching principle
        The assessment principle
        The technology principle
        The learning principle
Learning Theories supporting these principles

 Constructivist Theory
Humans learn through constructing their own
knowledge – connecting new ideas to
       previously learned information.
             *Connections to this class
    Teacher as facilitator, not lecturer.

 Sociocultural Mathematics Learning Theory
Not all children have been socialized to learn
       in the same way
Assessment
 Informal Assessment
       Quizzes, Tests, Assignments
       Other Methods

 Formal Assessment
        Mostly high stake testing

 Performance-based assessments/three levels of reasoning:

Reproduction- recall of facts procedures and definitions

Connections- connecting the concepts, making connections to
other content areas. Shows a deeper understanding of the
                 content

Analysis- interpretation, analysis and mathematical argumentation,
mathematical modeling of situations and generalization.
 “The child became an adult”

 The reading process
Before – setting a purpose for reading is important
         During – think alouds
After – responding to the text

 Multicultural Literature
Reaching students of every background through the use of
multicultural texts- improves motivation to read,
         promotes cultural awareness
*It is important not to use literature that might stereotype different
    cultures.

 Writing with meaning

 “Author’s chair”… Potential pitfalls for ELL’s, if any?
 Moving beyond ethnocentric views

 Black-White paradigm of race relations

“Considering bilingualism not as a disability but
rather as an advantage, many multicultural
educators encourage teachers to enrich their
teaching or even to redefine it, by teaching in
         both languages and integrating bicultural
elements from both the Anglo mainstream as
well as the Latino experience into the classroom
                     curriculum.” p.213
 Responding to Diversity and Inequality

 Changing demographics are pushing towards a change in
    Social Studies curriculums, textbooks, etc…

 “Education should be linked to emotion because the
brain’s emotional system drives learning and memory”
    p. 217

 “Learning to respect oneself and others is a major goal of
    social studies” p. 219

 Standardized testing

 Mexican American War
