Groundnut is the second most important legume in Uganda, cultivated on about 260,000 ha, but suffers from low yields averaging 800 kg/ha. Research has released 24 varieties to address various production constraints, but challenges remain due to agroecologies, land tenure, and market preferences. Current efforts focus on breeding for improved traits, employing advanced selection methods, and maintaining an active breeding pipeline to enhance crop performance and support smallholder farmers.
