Working With Special PopulationsHow to Make your classroom Accessible to All Students
What is a special need?IDEA lists 13 categories of Special NeedChildren are classified (not diagnosed) into these categories given exhibited difficulties and performance in the classroom and on a set of psychological and educational assessment tools. These students receive Special Education ServicesEvery category/area of need falls on a continuum. Not all children within a given category will present the same or have the same exact areas of difficulty
Why does this matter to you?INCLUSION, INCLUSION, INCLUSION In recent years many schools have moved away from the self-contained classroom model outside of students with MID and Pervasive Development Delays (at times)Students with special needs are being placed in the general education classroom Many teachers are not being trained to handle the different instructional strategies and adjustments required by students with special needs
This is where I come in!There’s a lot you can do to make your classroom accessible to all students Understanding the 13 categoriesList of CategoriesResourcesUnderstanding and Using Assistive technology Understanding IEP’s
