The need for Smartpen Technologies in the Classroom RECORDING PLAYBACK ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY WRITE DRAW NOTETAKING
Smartpen Uses Record everything you hear, write or draw Tap notes and play back recordings Save and share interactive notes to computer Assistive technology for students with disabilities
Teacher benefits More effectively deliver instruction Monitor and record student performance and progress Data Collection
Student benefits Unlimited access to teacher instruction anytime Ability to speed up or slow down lecture numerous times Record own voice for oral reports
Research Livescribe has developed an application called paper replay that synchronizes what is being written with the audio, making it valuable to students with or without disabilities.(Schaack) Students who write and review their notes perform better on tests than students just writing them Ability to connect with previous lectures Note reviewing is critical because researchers have found that students, when reviewing their notes, can make connections with prior knowledge, with subsequent study material, or among parts of the lecture material. (Tran& Lawson)
INDEPENDENT USER REVIEWS "It really changes the way I teach. The kids love it that they can check answers at their own pace rather than listening to me talk away at the chalkboard."
Steve, Physics Teacher, New Jersey "It's a great assessment tool"
Kathy Dillmeier, Media Specialist "For anything my students don't understand, they can go back to their notes to hear explanations of diagrams and keywords. This has been invaluable to my students, especially the special education students in my classes."
Wendy, Science Teacher, Louisiana "My program staff [are using the Pulse smartpen] for classroom observations and sharing with teachers"
Chris Dollinger, Coordinator State and Federal Program

Critical Mass Critical Mass” occurs at the point which enough individuals in a system adopt an invention and it becomes self-sustaining."(Rogers, 2003, pg334) The smartpen has not met critical mass yet.
Meeting Critical Mass The attributes that would help the innovation meet critical mass in the high school setting would be observability and perceived attributes. Observability because over time as the laggards begin to see the tool in action and realize its uses are far better than any current technology being used more will begin to try it out. ( Rogers)
Diffusion Approach Decentralized Diffusion: Best approach because it involves peer to peer diffusion through horizontal networks.( Rogers) Driven by user motivation
Change Agents “Adaptors serve as their own change agents in diffusing their innovations to others.”(Rogers) Teachers Administrators Tech Department Directors Develop need Change Agents are innovators who: Diagnose problems Exchange information
Champions Champions of the smartpen include: General education teachers General education students Special education students Students with disabilities
Need for the Smartpen Comprehensive note-taking Information recall Note sharing
How the smartpen will meet the need: The smartpen is Affordable The smartpen is Easy to carry The smartpen is Adaptable
