Project Identification and Selection Process Project Criteria 1
Upon completing this module, students should be able to: Identify and select projects Evaluate a potential Black Belt Project Explain the project selection process Objectives – Project ID and Selection
Project Identification Pain point or strategic concern is identified Black Belt investigates to see what BB Team could do to help resolve the issue Establish a Green Belt DMAGIC project Establish a Black Belt DMAGIC project Conduct a Lean Event Kaizen VSM 5S Establish a Black Belt DMADV project Establish a Black Belt Consulting project Do nothing
Project Selection Criteria Projects will likely have greater success if… The problem is related to a key business issue The problem is linked to a clearly defined process (you can identify the starting and ending points) You can identify the internal or external customers who use or receive the output from this process You know or can find out how the customers use the output You know or can find out what is important to the customer about the output 4 .
Project Selection Criteria You can clearly identify what a defect is and count its occurrence You can demonstrate how improvements could enhance financial performance There is appropriate organizational support The Champion cares about this work and wants to make it happen The Champion has the authority to commit time and resources A process owner has been identified
Documenting a possible project Contact the potential project idea author to understand the full nature of the project idea. Discuss the project idea with the proposed process owner, champion, etc. as necessary to gather information required to complete the project charter
Documenting a possible project Fill in a project charter with the information available. Customer CTQ's Champion Name Problem Statement Process Owner Name Project Scope Goal Statement Baseline Metric Performance Expected Benefits Estimate Process Map Number (if available) Proposed Team Member Function and/or name Estimated overall project cycle time (100,140.180 days?)
Recording An Idea
Recording An Idea What data is necessary to prioritize and select?
Common Problems and Recommendations Many projects encounter one or more of the following problems: Not relevant to customers or to business needs Project scope too large; won’t have authority to commit time/resources or to make changes in the process; can’t easily identify starting and ending points Relevant data hard to collect or too much data Can’t define what a defect is Process doesn’t cycle often enough Problem written as solution (defect defined as the X that needs correction)
Estimating Financial Impact Limited resources necessitate project prioritization Estimates of potential financial impact plus identifying strategic support projects facilitate this prioritization At this point, exact financial estimates are not necessary, but the values do need to be quantified well enough to correctly place the project in the priority list In 3D, we will review financial categories in more detail
BB Project Evaluation Exercise Instructions: Using the criteria for shaping a project, make rough estimates of the impact your project is likely to have. Be prepared to discuss your ideas with the class. 10 Min
