DAHMO01 ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY AND THEORY MODERNITY AND MODERNISM
SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
The subject considers the relationship between the
diverse practices of Modernism in art and architecture
and theories of modernity as they bear upon and are
challenged by these practices.
Although focused on the 20th century, the subject
will cover some important antecedents in the 19th
century. We will also interrogate the future of
architectural style and the role of the architect in the
changing world of today.
Rather than attempt a broad survey of architectural
history, the subject focuses on key ideas as they have
manifested across time including the present and
future variants on the idea of modernity.
The subject is arranged in a series of 10 weekly
discussion venues and workshops covering a
comprehensive range of architectural themes
and seeks to develop students’ abilities to read,
understand and interpret key aspects of architectural
design through class participation, case study
analysis, vocabulary development and a series of
graphic analytical exercises.
MODERNISM IS A STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE WHICH DEVELOPED FROM THE
END OF THE 19TH CENTURY TO MID 20TH... IT HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON THE
FORM AND THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE AT THE TIME AND CONTINUES TO
DO SO... IT HAD MANY POSITIVE IMPACTS BUT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A FEW
NEGATIVE RESULTS AS WELL...

ALTHOUGH THIS SUBJECT IS ABOUT HISTORY IT IS ALSO ABOUT THEORY...
SOMETIMES THEORY DISCUSSES WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST...
THEORY MAY ALSO BE A WAY TO THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE... MANY
ARCHITECTS ARE ALSO THEORISTS WHO WRITE DISCOURSES ABOUT THEIR
IDEAS IN MANIFESTOS

FOR EACH OF THE 10 THEMES YOU WILL CONDUCT RESEARCH AND
COMPLETE A VISUALISATION ACTIVITY BASED ON AN HISTORICALLY

YOUR HISTORICAL RESEARCH
In this subject you will learn about historical concepts and architectural examples that embody
and exemplify those concepts.
Your work in the first 8 weeks will focus on understanding how an architectural style develops
from a diverse set of influences to an all encompassing movement.
The movement we will study is Modernism.

YOUR FUTURE VISION
Learning activities culminate in the written and visual presentation of your
Future Vision for architectural style based upon critical analyses of existing
architectural masterpieces and a scaffold of contemporary theoretical and
practical projects which supports the thesis of the subject that ...
we must look back to look forward.

ASSESSMENT
There are four assessment items in the subject:
Projects 1, 2a and 2b represent the research and analysis of historical precedent
and theoretical concepts conducted in the first 8 weeks of semester.
Project 3 provides students with the opportunity to become architectural
visionaries and curate their research into a final presentation document and
manifesto.
The assessment items include a vocabulary component which is aimed at
improving students’ architectural word power in order to enhance their ability to
engage in critical reflection on themes and works of architecture.
