- 37. Data modeling questions and answers 37 Q: Are there are any templates or standard business content for Cognos reporting with JDE? Or with Cognos Framework Manager data models for JDE line of business areas? A: We know that is a common combo/use case. We've done a lot of work with Cognos and JDE. If there isn't a template out there -- we should create one and will look into that. Q: We use Transformer based packages with data modules, can we re-model the data using the data module? A: Transformer (PowerCube) packages are not supported in data modules at this time (nor are DMR). Q: What version and release Cognos Analytics are you using for the demo? A: We used 11.1.4.
- 38. Data modeling questions and answers 38 Q: In IBM Cognos Analytics is it possible to include a view in my data module? I am using a SQL Server database, when I set up my source, I do not see the views even though the schema is dbo. A: Yes, views are supported. Q: Why should we continue to use Framework Manager if data modules are available? A: Data modules still don’t have all the functionality of Framework Manager. That said, data modules are the strategic direction for IBM, with FM going into maintenance mode, where new functionality will no longer be added. New functionality will continue to be added to data modules, so eventually it will be on par and/or surpass FM.
- 39. Data modeling questions and answers 39 Q: Is it possible to get the Tableau and Power BI expand/collapse in lists and crosstab in Cognos? A: No, it would be really nice. People have been asking IBM that for years, we’re not sure why they haven’t added it. Q: Does Cognos have an alternative to Power BI datasets, specifically with regard to storing data offline from the data source? A: Yes, you can create datasets in Cognos, which are columnar files stored on the Cognos server that behave very much like Power BI imports or Tableau extracts. Q: Why have you not mentioned using Cognos OLAP TM1 engine and only Cognos Framework Manager? A: The skills and separate tools required to create these cubes make that a non- trivial effort.
- 40. Data modeling questions and answers 40 Q: Does Cognos have the capability to do high-level transformations? A; Yes, while Cognos has a lot of modeling capabilities, it has not focused heavily on transforms, which tend to be used more often on file-based data sources. Q: Can I easily upload Excel files with multiple tabs? A: Yes, you can upload multiple sheets in a workbook into Cognos. What Cognos cannot do is transform that Excel report format into a structure that could be used as a dataset (i.e., unpivot columns, promote row to header, fill).
- 41. Data modeling questions and answers 41 Q: Do you know whether Cognos is planning on including data prep in the future? A: We believe the IBM product team is building data prep out in data modules and plan to continue adding data modules functionality. Q: Can I use any of these tools to script in or integrate with R Shiny vs. generic R? A: We don’t think either tool supports that presently, although you can embed a URL call to a Shiny app in either tool.
