What is DPM 2007? Microsoft’s continuous data protection application v2.0 Block-based synchronization & VSS express full backup Native tape handling capabilities DPM Management Shell based on Windows PowerShell Updated application support: Windows 2003 SP1, Windows 2003 R2, and Windows 2008 Windows XP Professional SP2 Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate Exchange 2003 SP2 and Exchange 2007 SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 SharePoint Services 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Hyper-V
DPM Recovery Points Point-in-time snapshot of protected data source Discrete recovery point Stored in a VSS replica on DPM server Created by express full backup process Created at regular intervals or custom schedule Comparable to a conventional full backup Uses the Exchange Backup APIs to ensure log file truncation is properly handled
How DPM 2007 Protects Data
DPM Finds Files that Make Up Data D:\ + \SQL_data + \Customer.MDF E:\ + \SQL_logs + \Customer.LDF
DPM Identifies Blocks that Compose Files DPM filter creates a volume map, to monitor which disk blocks contain portions of the files to be protected. DPM Filter – Volume Map D:\ + \SQL_data + \Customer.MDF E:\ + \SQL_logs + \Customer.LDF
Start of Synchronization Window VOLUME (actual disk blocks) Time = 10:00 DPM Filter – Volume Map
