User Interface in
Data Warehouse
User interface
• The means by which the user and a computer system interact,
in particular the use of input devices and software.
• The purpose of a UI is to enable a user to effectively control a
computer or machine they are interacting with.
• A successful user interface should be intuitive (not require
training to operate), efficient (not create additional or
unnecessary friction) and user-friendly (be enjoyable to use).
Data Warehouse
• A data warehouse is constructed by integrating data from
multiple heterogeneous sources.
• It supports analytical reporting, structured and/or ad hoc
queries and decision making.
• A data warehouses provides us generalized and consolidated
data in multidimensional view.
UI and Data Warehouse
• UI of Data warehouse is a step which describe how users will
access the data warehouse.
• Front end development is how users will access the data for
analysis and run reports.
• There are many options available, including building your
front end in-house or purchasing an off the shelf product.
• Secure access to the data from any device - desktop, laptop,
tablet, or phone should be the primary consideration.
• The tool should allow your development team to modify the
backend structure as enterprise level reporting requirements
change.
• It should also provide a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that
enables users to customize their reports as needed.
OLAP engine
• OLAP is a category of software that allows users to analyze
information from multiple database systems at the same time.
• OLAP stands for Online Analytical Processing.
• Analysts frequently need to group, aggregate and join data.
These operations in relational databases are resource intensive.
• With OLAP data can be pre-calculated and pre-aggregated,
making analysis faster.
Obviously it is an information system. But without any additional information,
no one would be able to use it. As before, when we got pull down menus, tool
bars, and cut and paste, we have to get some general information about this
kind of an interface.
Selecting interface
• Data Warehouse users get useful information from the data
warehouse and data marts through user interfaces.
• It is these user interfaces that have the most impact on how
effective and useful the data warehouse will be perceived.
• Therefore, users must be actively involved in selecting their
own interface to the data warehouse.
• Two primary criteria for selecting an effective user
interface are
o Ease of use
o Performance
• Ease of use, most enterprises turn to graphical user interfaces.
• Performance developers must ensure that the software
platform fully supports and is optimized for every chosen user
interface.
User Categories
• The most important selection criteria for user interfaces are
the information needs and the level of potential users who will
retrieve the information.
• The following data warehouse user categories are based on
levels of literacy and information needs:
o Information Systems Challenged
o Variance Oriented
o Number Crunchers
o Technically Oriented
• The final user interface criterion is that it supports the access
meta data designed for the data warehouse.
• If a user interface is easy to use, allows all potential users to
get the information.
o They need in the format they need,
o Does it in an acceptable amount of time.
Summary
Data warehouse design is a time consuming and challenging
endeavor. There will be good, bad, and ugly aspects found in
each step. However, if an organization takes the time to
develop sound requirements at the beginning, subsequent
steps and friendly user interface in the process will flow
more logically and lead to a successful data warehouse
implementation.
Thank you!
