Why IPv6? Leading with a carrot… Value adding IPv6 supports brand-new IP equipment and enables IP systems Higher reliability, maintenance & scalability Low cost IPv6 provides network integration and simple / smart IP network Pushing with a stick… IPv4 address exhaustion Government policies © NTT America 2008. What Will Finally Drive IPv6 Deployment? IPv4 Address Depletion Current estimates are that IPv4 addresses will run out sometime around 2012 (depending the your source and consumption rates). This problem is more critical outside the U.S. where IPv4 address space is historically more limited. IPv6 is the best solution to the address shortage because of the massive increase in address space and a host of other benefits. New Applications Next generation network applications will require ubiquitous network access from a wide range of devices. IPv6 provides address space to uniquely identify these new devices and better end-to-end security to ease the deployment of these new services. We see new network applications as the most likely driver of IPv6 deployment. © NTT America 2008. All Rights Reserved

New Applications for the Upgraded Internet Emergency Earthquake Alert Service The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is working with NTT Communications to use IPv6 as part of an earthquake early warning system. Sensors that detect tremors communicate with JMA server  JMA server hands data to NTT IPv6 multicast server, which distributes data via the NTT IPv6 multicast network to consumers and businesses. System gives advance earthquake warnings to factories, railroads, utilities, schools and other companies & subscribers. This system can be developed to initiate automated fire-suppression system, to automatically stop elevators, close natural gas and petroleum pipeline valves, etc. Commercially offered to corporate customers since July 1, 2007. © NTT America 2008.
