DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM
The digital ecosystem of a business
is the combination of all relevant
digital touch points, the people that
interact with them, and the business
processes and technology
environment that support both.
(Ryan McCormack, 2011)
DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM OF STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY
The digital ecosystem for a business is a mix of touch points, people, and
supporting elements- (McCormack, 2011)
By Dr. William J. Wardard
FROM SITES TO
SYSTEMS
A few year back, the online world
used to be easy to understand and
manage for many companies. Building
a corporate website and maintaining
it. People came to the web site using
their desktop computer, found what
they wanted, and left.
SYSTEMS THINKING
The first step in systems thinking
is to think of the digital world as
a system of interconnected
elements that is coherently
organized in a way that achieves
something (McCormack, 2011)
We are complex systems—our own
bodies are magnificent examples of
integrated, interconnected, self-
maintaining complexity. Every person
we encounter, every organization,
every animal, garden, tree, and
forest is a complex system (Donella
Meadows,2009)
We have built up intuitively, without
analysis, often without words, a
practical understanding of how these
systems work, and how to work with
them. There are three key concepts
in this basic definition;
-elements,
-interconnections, and
-a function or purpose.
PROPERTIES OF A SYSTEM
Systems are hierarchical: - They are
composed of many other smaller
systems (e.g, the AMS, KOHA & KUALI
in Strathmore university is a system
that exists within the broader system
of the university), elements can have
sub-elements (almost ad infinitum)
Digital systems are dynamic: The
behaviour of a system over time is of
paramount importance. Some systems
sit in an equilibrium (static or
dynamic), and change very little with
time, whereas others have complex
and unpredictable behaviours. (for
instance the Kuali financial system of
SU was recently integrated to banks
Systems have feedback loops: Over
time, the stocks within systems can be
depleted or grow based on flows
through negative or positive feedback
loops, respectively (e.g AMS, KOHA,
KUALI etc of Strathmore University,
215 Mbps)
Elements: Digital touch points
Controlled touch points: Digital
experiences are designed and
completely controlled by a business
(web sites, desktop and mobile
applications. The touch points are of
primary importance (if a firm gets
them wrong, the other touch points
may not matter too much).
Social publishing touch points: e.g
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and
LinkedIn. A company sets up these
digital presences, to publish content
to them. They are not completely
within company control, the
experience design is fixed by the
platform, user-generated content is
a significant part of the experience.
Third-party touch points: Search
engines and social review services
which offer search engine optimization
(SEO) marketing services will review
your website and provide you with
recommendations to improve it for ...
customized social media marketing
and content writing services to
maximize visibility
Elements: Business processes
If the management of touch points
should be such that they support the
business processes. If the management
of the touch point is chaotic and
inefficient and does not support
business processes (Cont. management
and the associated workflows),the core
business of a firm will be affected
Elements: Technical environment
The technology behind a digital
ecosystem:
-the Internet - hosts,
-Appl. Infrastructure - servers,
-cloud services - networks
Technology and its components are
important in a digital ecosystem of
businesses.
The
Interconnections: Information flows
Every system in the Strathmore
University digital ecosystem is
connected in such a way that it
supports the flow of information,
designed to support the function of
the system.
Information flows - requests for
content, social platforms etc
Interconnections: Hyperlinks
Links facilitate the flow of
information, they are the
connective tissue between many
different elements of a digital
ecosystem. They allow people to
discover content and find the
products and services of interest to
them..
A culture of continuous
improvement:
