DECISIONS AND GOALS
Health 8
OBJECTIVE
Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills and goal setting
skills as ways to enhance health.
DECISION MAKING
• A decision is a choice that you make and act upon.
• A good decision is a decision in which you have carefully considered the outcome of
each choice.
YOUR DECISIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES
•Consequences of your decisions not only affect you but also affect the
people around you. There are three types of consequences:
1.Positive consequences help you or others.
2.Negative consequences do harm to you and/or to others.
3.Neutral consequences are neither helpful nor harmful.
6 STEPS TO DECISION MAKING
Step 1: Identify the problem.
• The first step in making a decision is to identify the problem
and to clearly define it.
• This helps us know what we are considering so we can move
to the next steps of the decision-making process
6 STEPS TO DECISION MAKING
• Step 2: Consider your values
• Values: Are beliefs that you consider to be important
• Knowing your values will help you make good decisions.
• Examples:
• Respect for self and others
• Responsibility
• Honesty
• Self- Control
6 STEPS TO DECISION MAKING
• Step 3: List the options
• Options are different choices that you can make. The best
way to identify your options is to take time to think about
them and make a list or brainstorming with several other
people.
6 STEPS TO DECISION MAKING
• Step 4: Weigh the consequences
• When you weigh the consequences of a possible decision,
you compare the benefits and risks of your choices. Every
option will have risks and benefits to consider.
• It is good to write these down
6 STEPS TO DECISION MAKING
• Step 5: Take action
• When you make your choice, take action!
• You can only think and brainstorm for so long, after
considering your options, you have to take action.
6 STEPS TO DECISION MAKING
• Step 6: Evaluate your decision
• Use the outcome of your decision to see if it was a good decision.
• What were the outcomes, were they positive, negative, or
neutral?
• How can evaluation help you make better decisions in the
future?
SIMPLIFIED DECISION MAKING
• 3 questions to ask yourself to evaluate your decision
• Did I do…
• The right thing?
• At the right time?
• In the right way?
DISCUSSION
• Discussion titled “Making Decisions”
• Answer questions from directions and respond to 2 classmates
Influences and Examining
Decisions
INFLUENCES
• Influence is a force that affects your choices when you have a decision to make.
• Examples:
• Family
• Friends
• Teachers
• Coaches
YOUR FAMILY
• Your family is likely the most important influence in your
life. Every family has values, cultural beliefs, and
traditions.
• Your family also affects your decisions about your health
practices. Decisions you make about how much you exercise,
what food you eat, and how you react to stress probably
reflect your family’s habits.
PEER PRESSURE
•Peer pressure is a feeling that you should do something
because your friends want you to do.
•Peer pressure from a group can be particularly powerful. It
is hard to say no to a group of people who are your friends.
•Positive peer pressure vs Negative peer pressure?
OTHER INFLUENCES IN YOUR LIFE
• Some of the most powerful messages that you hear come
from the media.
• The media includes TV, Internet, movies, social media,
music, and news reports.
• How can we know who to listen to?
EXAMINING DECISIONS
• Consequences: the result of an action that you
take
• Precaution: is an action to avoid negative
consequences
HOW TO EVALUATE DECISIONS
• Would my decision…
• Uphold my values
• Set a good example for others
• Cause someone else pain
• Help me reach my goals
• Prevent me from reaching my goals
• Help others
• Build relationships with friends/family
DISCUSSION
• Discussion titled “Influences and Examining
Decisions”
• Answer questions from directions and respond to 2
classmates
Setting your Goals
GOALS
• A goal is something that you want and are willing to work for
• Why are goals important? Goals make you feel better about yourself and build self-
esteem
• Self esteem refers to how you feel about yourself as a person and how much you
value yourself
SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS
•Short-term goals are tasks that you can accomplish in
hours, days, or weeks.
•Long-term goals may take months or even years to reach.
Long- term goals are usually made up of several short-term
goals and even other long-term goals.
DEFINING YOUR INTEREST
• An interest is something that you enjoy and want to learn
more about.
• You can have an interest in things such as art, athletics,
music, or science.
• Like your values, your interests influence your goals.
AFTER LOOKING AT THE TABLE BELOW,
CONSIDER ONE THING THAT YOU VALUE AND
ONE THING THAT INTERESTS YOU.
REACHING YOUR GOALS
• Success: is the achievement of your goal
• An action plan is that map that you outline with steps to reaching your goal
• Action Plans include:
• A clearly stated goal
• The steps you need to accomplish your goal
• A timeline for how long it will take you to reach your goal (short term or long term?)
• Resources or people that you will use to reach your goal
SETBACKS
• Setbacks: something that goes wrong or not according to our plan
• Discuss with person next to you…
• If you face a setback are you a failure? Why?
• Everyone reaches their goals right away, true or false? Why?
GOALS CAN CHANGE
• Persistence: is the commitment to keep working towards your goal even when things
don’t work exactly as planned
• Assessing: measuring your short term achievement working towards your long term
goal to see if you can keep your goals or if there are things that need to change
• Coping: Dealing with problems, troubles, and setbacks in effective ways that allow
us to be persistent in reaching our goals
• Everyone who sets goals sometimes makes a bad decision when trying to reach his
or her goal. To be successful, you must learn from your mistakes. Take time to think
about what you did and what can you do differently next time?
GOALS BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS
• Goals can help you build healthy relationships. A healthy
relationship begins when you and a friend or family member
work toward goals together.
• Goals don’t have to be done alone. Share your goals with
family, friends, teachers or coaches. They can help you
achieve your goals
COMMUNICATION
•Communication is the ability to exchange information and
the ability to express your thoughts and feelings clearly.
•Clear communication allows you to let others know exactly
what you want or expect so that no misunderstandings take
place.
LISTENING SKILLS
•To develop good listening skills, follow these suggestions:
1.Pay attention to the person who is speaking.
2.Make eye contact.
3.Nod when you understand.
4.Ask questions when you don’t understand.
REACHING YOUR GOALS
You can follow the six steps to making good decisions to reach
goals.
1. Identify the Problem.
2. Consider your values.
3. List the options.
4. Weigh the consequences.
5. Decide, and act.
6. Evaluate your choice.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
• Skills Are Tools: Think of the skills in this lesson as tools in
a toolbox. Each skill is a tool that you can use to set goals,
evaluate them, and overcome setbacks.
MEASURING YOUR PROGRESS
• By measuring your progress, you can see if you are on the
right track. And the only way to be sure that you have
progressed is to check your results.
• Measure our progress with SMART goals
SMART GOALS
Decisions and Goals PPT for 8th health class
SET SOME GOALS
• On schoology we will be working on setting some SMART goals, that we can
evaluate and change if needed as we go along this quarter.
• Write a SMART goal for one of the classes that you want to improve your grade in.
• Write a SMART goal for improving in something you do outside of school (sports,
band, choir, play, work, etc.)
• Write a SMART goal for your health that you want to improve.
• Exercise each day, eat some fruits or veggies each day, making healthy choices
EXAMPLE
• Workout to get stronger and be in better shape for grass volleyball over the summer
• S- I want to exercise so that I can be in better shape for grass volleyball over the
summer.
• M- I will keep track of the weight I lift and my own weight
• A- This goal to get into shape is achievable because it is something that I have time to
work on for a couple months before the summer comes
• R- It is relevant because I play in tournaments over the summer and know that I will
play better if I’m in better shape
• T- I will accomplish this goal by the summer. I will look to workout for 4 days a week

Editor's Notes

  • #24: END
  • #31: How we are sharing our goals or working with others will help us be more effective in reaching our goals
  • #32: Just as much as communicating is important, so is listening. Seek wisdom and advice from people who have already achieved your goals or are people that you know you can look up to. Communicate with them, but most importantly listen. You have one mouth and 2 ears, so we should listen more than we speak.
  • #38: Work time to work on goals.
