Deconstruction of sci fi trailers
- 1. DECONSTRUCTION OF THE ROGUE ONE TRAILER
- 2. BACKGROUND/SYNOPSIS A science fiction movie from the franchise of Star Wars, produced by Disney, created by Lucasarts. Former scientist Galen Erso lives on a farm with his wife and young daughter Jyn. His peaceful existence comes crashing down when the evil Orson Krennic takes him away from his beloved family. Many years later, Galen is now the Empire's lead engineer for the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, the Death Star. Knowing that her father holds the key to its destruction, a vengeful Jyn joins forces with a spy and other resistance fighters to steal the space station's plans for the Rebel Alliance.
- 4. Establishing shot, high angle panning across the city. Use of CGI for the recognisable Tie fighter this is particularly a pull as it one of the most popular vehicles in Star wars Entirely CGI generated landscape. This is a unseen part of the Star Wars universe and an amazing visual to watchers pulling intrigue to the movie. Alien city immediately sets the theme of science fiction.
- 5. Main character immediately established she takes the foreground of the shot, the focus on her face highlighted by natural light. Costume is used her to again link into the theme of the science fiction movie, she looks at home in the setting but of course out of place in a real world society. Clearly the unknown nature of this future world is portrayed. Diegetic dialogue can be heard underneath this shot speaking of the supposed villains of the movie “The Empire” the intensity of her reaction leads the watcher to think she will be fighting against them Background is out of focus to bring the watchers eyes to the protagonist.
- 6. Non-digetic music builds to a climax here the trumpets dominating audio. This builds suspense. As the panning shot reaches the top so too does the music. Shot pans slowly upwards revealing yet another spaceship. Another recognisable feature of the Star Wars universe to pull fans. In addition to those with no prior knowledge it asserts the science fiction genre and builds interest in the universe CGI is used to create a spaceship here obviously an effect impossible without computer generated effects. This visual is a pull to movie goers who enjoy seeing different worlds.
- 7. Production company shown, known for it’s science fiction productions building expectations in the movie. Production companies are a stable of all film trailers. Interestingly however the trailer decided to wait 14 seconds before showing it perhaps hoping to pull watchers further into the trailer with immediate action. Music continues to build.
- 8. Diegetic dialogue used here to build up the protagonist. We hear talk of “shackles”. In this way we begin to make an opinion of her character. Set is used here to build up the science fiction theme. This is an unknown and strange location and again builds intrigue for a watcher. A old character of the Star War’s movies takes the centre of the shot here, exciting the loyal fan base.
- 9. Space can clearly be seen in the background a crucial feature of many sci-fi movies. CGI generated spaceship a massively recognisable feature of the Star Wars genre- ‘The Death Star’
- 10. In this scene we hear identical dialogue: “Yes.” “Yes.” in this way the script it cleverly used to show a unity in the smallest amount of words possible. The cockpit is clearly visible here. Spaceships are used throughout the trailer to fit the sci-fi theme.
- 11. Establishing panning shot of what we assume is ‘the empire’ the prop of the vehicle is used in this shot, this gives them dominance and power. Costume is used here to set the Empire away from everyone else, their white armour striking against the dust colour background.
- 12. Here practical effects are used to create the robot. Robot’s are a key feature of sci-fi movies and further asserts the theme. Such well done physical effects are also a draw to movies as audiences enjoy being transported to another universe.
- 13. Another key feature of trailers is shown here- telling the audience the date the movie will be released. This raises anticipation for the movie and allows audience time to plan and see it.
- 14. The next sequence show cases a range of action scenes in fast succession. This is a pull for those who may not be interested in the science fiction genre but do enjoy action movies. In each sequence a range of effects are used however most of it seems to be practical effects. This is a pull for original fans who enjoyed the practical effects used in the first star wars movies. Each shot is action packed and leaves the audience somewhat stunned lost in the fast paced action and interested in seeing more. Stunt work showcased here in the storm troopers. Practical effects of fire are used here. CGI and model work used here to create the effect of flying spaceships.
- 15. Another huge visual effect is used here, visuals can be a massive pull to blockbuster movies. The dialogue: “There is a 99% chance of failure” is heard under this shot. With the addition of action sequences this raises the anticipation for the movie.
- 16. A jungle setting is used in this shot, this is a setting never before seen in the Star Wars. A draw of sci fi movies is that of unknown and foreign settings and this Science fiction machines feature in many trailers. This strange machine pulls audiences who like to be transported to other worlds. AT-AT a recognisable vehicle of the star wars universe.
- 17. In this shot we hear the dialogue “Are you with me” “All the way” This dialogue in combination with the amount of features gives out the feeling of a quest based around our main character. The amount of people: alien and human is a pull for the movie. A quest important to human kind and the
- 18. In this moment the audience for the first time is introduced to the title of the movie. This is done following a range of action sequences raising anticipation and excitement for the movie trailer. In this way the movie is more likely to stay on the audiences mind as it follows such a high of excitement.
- 19. In this shot we see the main villain of the movie: Darth Vader. While of course to a audience who has never viewed a Star Wars movie this shot is meaningless, to fans it is a huge pull. A beloved member of the Star Wars universe back on the big screen. The key concept we can take from this however is to put in a final pull to your movie.
- 20. After this final pull the date is displayed allowing the audience to become excited for the upcoming movie.
