A formal definition paragraph starts with defining the term, stating the class it belongs to, and providing the special characteristic that makes it different from other items in that class. For example, an elementary school can be formally defined as a school for children from five or six to twelve or fourteen years old that belongs to the class of schools, and an encyclopedia can be defined as a book that gives information on subjects in alphabetic order belonging to the class of books.
