Why digital media?

• Visual / interactive media has a higher level of engagement
• Easy for both pupils and teachers to use
• Makes learning fun
• Engage pupils through collaboration
• Ability to monitor progress
• Online discussions can remove the situation of certain pupils
  dominating a discussion whilst giving quieter or more
  intimidated students the opportunity and encouragement to join
  in
• It’s safe when used properly!

•   Over 950 million users
•   Popular for posting rich media: photo albums, videos etc…posts
    featuring images generate 53% more likes
•   The identity of the Facebook page administrator is hidden
•   Privacy settings enable you to block obscenities as well as any
    terminology you deem unfit for discussion
•   Inappropriate posts can be removed
•   Your page can be set to prevent pupils posting pictures
•   It’s free!

•   How your school could be utilising Facebook

    - Create fun exercises on your Facebook posts
    - Install “apps” on your page (there may be a charge)

•   Users can also hold video conversations, known as a hangout,
    with their audience. Up to 9 people can join these conversations
•   Hangouts can also be streamed via Youtube and embedded

•   Because it is integrated with Google’s search engine, it has the
    potential to upstage both Facebook and Twitter. It currently has
    400 million users, 235 million of whom are active monthly users

What is www.edmodo.com ?
•   A FREE social learning platform for teachers, students, and parents
•   Has a similar user-interface to Facebook
•   Provides teachers and students a secure place to connect, collaborate
    and share content
•   Teachers are also able to post grades, assignments and quizzes to
    students
•   Students can submit homework and view their grades and any
    comments the teacher may have posted about their assignment.
•   Teachers can also create polls and post topics for discussion among
    the students
•   Teachers can differentiate and individualize learning through the
    creation of sub-groups within a course. After each course period is
    completed; the teacher closes out the network and creates a new one
    for the next course
•   There are also iOS and Android apps available
•   To prevent outsiders from joining school networks, Edmodo provides
    special codes to schools and classes. These codes are given to
    students and are necessary to join groups

• www.edublogs.org Safe secure blog that can be used for
  student blogging, facilitating discussions, class publications,
  posting videos, podcasts and documents
• www.schooltube.com YouTube for schools. Due to its school
  based nature it is not generally blocked by the school filters
• www.teachertube.com YouTube for teachers proving a great
  resource for both lesson plans and actual lesson content.
