Data Types & File Formats
• Data type:
• 2D
• Raster
• Vector
• Hybrid (Raster and Vector)
• 3D
• Animation (2D & 3D)
• File Formats
• How many do we need!
• Principal open formats
• Raster – JPEG, TIFF, PNG, etc.
• Vector – PDF, CGM, SVG, AI etc.
• 3D – PRC, U3D, 3DXML, X3D (VMRL)
• Animation – SWF, SVG, 3D PDF
KNOWLEDGE:
The word Raster originates from the term
'raster scan,' which was how old CRT
monitors displayed images, by magnetically
steering a concentrated electron beam line
by line to form an image.
KNOWLEDGE:
Vector graphics is the use of geometrical
primitives such as points, lines, curves, and
shapes or polygons—all of which are based
on mathematical expressions—to
represent images in computer graphics.

Production Software
• Best practice, implement software designed for the task
• Adapting software not designed for the task can prove to be a false economy
• Mass Market graphics software does not always have the required
features
• Specialist software, the cost is usually higher but the Return on
Investment is faster
• Software can be categorized by capability:
• 2D
• 3D
• Animation
• Compliance

Deployment
• How do we deploy technical graphics electronically?
• The hardware is a primary consideration
• The majority of hardware devices are very capable
• They usually have a web browser or specific Apps on mobile devices
• The complications
• The browser might not natively support the required file formats
• Plug-ins not supported on mobile devices
• Technical Graphics can require a secondary software
• Good example CGM, a plug-in is usually required to view the graphic
• Consider the file format you’re using, is there an alternative?
www.cgmlarson.com

Mechanisms for Deployment
• Raster
• Embedded in the HTML code (JPEG, PNG)
• Vector (2D)
• CGM - Plug-in or new Larson HTML5 technology
• SVG – HTML5 Native
• 3D files
• A viewer plug-in is usually required dependent on the format
• The WebGL technology provides a HTML5 solution, no plug-in
• Animation (2D and 3D)
• Traditionally viewer plug-in required
• The HTML5 technology is changing the plug-in paradigm?
www.cgmlarson.com

Microsoft Edge
• Many IETM’s use Internet Explorer as their foundation technology
• Edge is the new version of the browser bundled with Windows 10
• Edge no longer support’s ActiveX controls (Plug-ins)
• The result plug-ins such as Arbortext IsoView will no longer be
supported
• The short term decision is not to update
• The mid and long term strategy
seek an alternative technology
• Casualty - Flash?

Mobilization of Technical Graphics
• Biggest challenge - how do we display Technical Graphics on
mobile devices
• Both iOS and Android present the
same challenge, viewing the graphic
and maintain functionality
• If you want to view the graphic
in isolation apps are available
on iOS
• Larson iVizEx View (CGM)
• SVG Viewer I
• PDF Reader

Mobilization of Technical Graphics (2)
• If the requirement is to display the whole technical manual,
text and graphics, another solution is necessary on mobile
devices
• The majority of tablets and smart phones have a web browser
pre-installed
• The browser should support HTML5
• The HTML5 technology offers new and exciting opportunities
to deliver graphics on mobile devices, no plug-ins!
• In fact HTML5 applies to all hardware platforms running a web
browser
• Caveat: The device might need to be in a connected state
