Depth of Knowledge
The Depth of Knowledge (DKO) is crucial
for planning lessons and choosing the right
instructional techniques. It kelps to break
down and categorize internal processes
that operate during problem solving. DOK
levels allow students to adapt to
challenges, work cooperatively and solve
problems on their own

Depth of knowledge & the 21st century learner
Depth of Knowledge(DOK)
What is
DOK?
-DOK is a model
developed by
Norman Webb in
1997.
-It reflects different
levels of the
cognitive expectation
required to complete
a task (Miller,2018).
Characteristics of Webb’s
DoK Model
Defines levels to align and
analyze curriculum, objectives,
standards, and assessments
Names four different ways that
students interact with content
Relates closely to the depth of
content understanding and
scope of a learning activity
Focuses on skills required to
complete the task from
inception to finale
Depth of Knowledge Levels
Miller,2018
Levels of complexity of cognitive
Level 1: Recall and Reproduction
Requires eliciting information such as a fact, definition, term,
or a simple procedure, as well as performing a simple algorithm
or applying a formula.
Level 2: Basic Skills and Concepts
Requires the engagement of some mental processing beyond
a recall of information.
Levels (Cont)
-Level 3: Strategic Thinking & Reasoning
Requires reasoning, planning, using evidence, and explanations of
thinking
-Level 4: Extended Thinking
Requires complex reasoning, planning, developing, and thinking
most likely over an extended period of time
21st Century Skills
Teachers are to consider a
variety of factors when writing
Lesson Plans and assessing
learners. One of these factors is
the profile of the 21st. Century
learner, otherwise known as the
4 Cs of the 21st Century Skills.
Profile of the 21ST CENTURY Foreign
Language LEARNER
Communicator
Collaborator
Critical thinker
Creative
Thinker
As Communicators
Articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using
oral, written and nonverbal communication skills
in a variety of forms and contexts.
Use communication for a range of purposes
(e.g. to inform, instruct, motivate, and
persuade).
Communicate effectively in diverse multi-lingual
environments
As Collaborators
Foreign Language Learners
as collaborators
Use their L1 and
FL to
demonstrate
ability to work
effectively and
respectfully
with diverse
teams.
Exercise
flexibility and
willingness to
be helpful in
making
necessary
compromises to
accomplish a
common goal.
Assume shared
responsibility
for collaborative
work.
Value the
individual
contributions
made by each
team member
. As Critical Thinkers
FL learners are expected to:
-Exercise sound reasoning in understanding
-Make complex choices and decisions
-Understand the interconnections among
systems
-Identify and ask significant questions that
clarify various points of view and lead to
better solutions
-Frame, analyse and synthesize information
in order to solve problems and answer
questions.
Conclusion
One can summarize that the 21st Century learner should be
trained to develop skills on critical thinking, problem solving,
reasoning, analysis, interpretation, and synthesizing information.
Research skills and practices, interrogative questioning should
also be part of this type of learner. This learner main
characteristics should be pledged by creativity, curiosity,
imagination, and innovation.
