DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN THE
PATTERN ON A MAP
A common question in exams and one which is often
not done well….
WORK IN TWOS, TO DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN THE
PATTERN ON THE MAP. WRITE NOTES AROUND THE
MAP IN TWO COLOURS
 Describe – What is the
pattern?
 Where are many, some,
few or none?
 Are there clusters?
 Are there linear
patterns (lines)?
 Where are they?
Mention continents
and/or countries
 Directions – north,
south, east, west,
central
 Explain – Why is the
pattern like that?
 Why are there places
which have nothing, a
few or many?
 Could it be distance,
transport links, climate,
availability, price,
people, culture, or
familiarity?
SORT IT OUT!!!
There is a cluster in …
People are familiar with the food because
they go on holiday to these places
Most vegetables are from ...
There is easy access within the … trade bloc
to trade in different countries
Some come from east …..
They have to be transported by air and this is
expensive
The climate is too cold
There are none in ….
AND SOME MORE….
This could be due to the goods being
perishable
All around the equator
The levels of hygiene may be better in …
It needs to be transported fresh so comes
from the local area
There might be no tradition of … in those
countries.
Most of them come from ….
Only one comes from the whole of ….
AND….
It could be because of better standards of
animal welfare
Mostly from the southern part
…. is a cold month
Transport infrastructure may not be good
enough in parts of …
… needs to be frozen which makes it more
expensive
There are no linear patterns
The climate for growing spices is better here
AND…
Conditions are more favourable
… comes from countries that are not
landlocked
They don’t export much because there is
a large home market for it
Tropical fruits come from ….
The dry climate makes it difficult to
grow….
