This document discusses the design and simulation of a SEPIC converter for battery charging applications. It begins with an introduction to SEPIC converters and their advantages over other converter topologies. It then describes the operating principles and design considerations of SEPIC converters, including the derivation of design equations. A voltage control strategy using a PI controller is presented to regulate the output voltage under varying input voltage conditions. Simulation results are shown for an open-loop SEPIC converter providing 8-14V from a 12V input, and for a closed-loop controlled SEPIC converter maintaining regulation of the output voltage. The document concludes that a PI controlled SEPIC converter was successfully simulated to operate as both a buck and boost converter for battery charging applications.
