- 27. VC FUTURA 1927 In the first half of the 20th century the world of typography was in the middle of a huge facelift. Not only were revived typefaces flooding the mainstream but sans serifs were on the rise as well. Although sans serif typefaces weren’t a new idea its importance and popularity during the 1920’s and 30’s grew stronger. Originally sans serif fonts were controversial and were even given the name “grotesque.” They were only used on very rare occasions in advertising applications. It wasn’t until 1927 with the creation of Futura by Paul Renner that sans serif typefaces were fully embraced. In 1924 Paul Renner set out to create an entire typeface based on simple geometric shapes using tools like the T-square, the triangle and the compass. This typeface, named Futura, was eventually commisioned by Bauer Type Foundry in 1927. By 1928 Futura was considered the designer’s choice and was thought of as striking, tasteful and radical. It was extremely versatile and was the first sans serif to be used as text and display type for a book.
