There’s some evidence from animal studies that engaging in play opens up new neural connections in the brain, leading to greater creativity, he added. “All sorts of creative new connections are made when you’re playing that otherwise would never be made,” Brown added. Playing also engages the creative side of your brain. When you’re fully engaged in play, you lose some of your psychological barriers and stop censoring or editing your thoughts. This allows creative ideas to flow more freely. It’s not just the activity of playing that encourages creativity. When companies promote play, it engenders a more lighthearted atmosphere.

IDEO가 진행한 뱅크오 브아메라카(Bank of America)의 ‘잔돈은 가지세요 (Keep the Change)’라는 이름의 서비스는 이 광고 에 딱 어울리는 프로젝트다. 뱅크오브아메리카의 비자 체크 카드로 지불하는 물건 값의 거스름돈을 받지 않고 그 차액을 저축 계좌에 바로 입금해주는 것이 핵심 내용이다. 눈에 보이지 않는 ‘금융’이란 분야에 디자인 사고 방식을 적용한 이 프로젝트는 시행 첫 해에만 250만 명의 고객을 끌어들였고, 결 과적으로 1200만 명의 신규 고객을 유치하는 기록 을 세웠다. 어찌 보면 간단해 보이는 이 서비스의 개념은 금융 서비스를 잘 이해하고 사용하는 고객이 아니라, 오 히려 그 정반대에 있는 주부들의 행동을 다양한 관 점에서 관찰한 결과에서 나왔다. 자녀를 키우는 여 성 소비자들은 재정 문제에 관심은 많지만 금융이 라고 하면 어렵고 복잡하고 귀찮은 것으로 생각하 는 경우가 많았다. 이에 뱅크오브아메리카는 물건 을 사고 남은 거스름돈을 저금통에 모아두었다가 은행에 저축하는 일반적인 행동을 쉽고 편하게 할 수 있도록 서비스화한 것. 은행에 가야 하는 불편함 을 없애고, 저축을 할 수 있는 기회까지 넓혀 놨다. 이 서비스가 성공한 것은 그동안 생각지 못하던 방 법을 찾아냈을 뿐 아니라 눈에 보이지 않는 서비스 를 시각화해 이해하기 쉽도록 한 데 있다. 일단 이 름부터 그렇다. 주부들이 공과금을 쉽게 계산하기 위해 반올림하는 것에서 아이디어를 얻어 처음에 는 ‘반올림’이라는 이름을 생각하기도 했지만, 이 름 그 자체만으로도 어떤 서비스인지 바로 알 수 있 게 하는 것도 사용자가 보기엔 ‘서비스’일 수 있기 때문에 ‘잔돈은 가지세요’라고 이름지었다. 또한 광 고에서는 매일 마시는 3달러 43센트짜리 커피의 거 스름돈 57센트를 한 달 동안 저축하면 17달러가 된 다는 것을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 그래픽으로 알기 쉽게 표현해 호응을 얻었다. 은행은 가입 고객을, 고객은 저축을 늘릴 수 있어 사회・경제적 측면에서도 긍정 적인 결과를 가져온 서비스 디자인의 대표 사례다.
- #20: Stanford Mechanical Engineering 전공ME310 (Mechanical Engineering) – PHD 와 Master중심 1962 년부터 내려오는 전통으로 60년대 최고의 인기를 누림 Interaction 디자인 프로세스를 경험해보는 수업 모든 주제는 각 회사가 정한다. 전체 9개월로 이루어져 있으며 3quater 로 구성, 매년 10월 1일날 시작함 (일주일에 2시간짜리 수업) 3개월(기본적인 rapid proto 와 개념, testing, documenting 에 대한 training 을 실시) 11월 6일 : 1차 개념을 발표 (12개 사의 담당자와 6개 학교 대표가 참석함) 12월 말에 발표회 / 3개월(과제 prototyping 개발 중심) 3월 7일 발표회, 6월 4일 완료 발표회(관련자 전원이 학교로 다모임) 마지막 3개월 문서 작업 Documentation 중심 현재 전세계 6개의 학교로 구성되어 있으며 12개의 project 가 동시에 시작함 스탠포드대 생은 6명~9명 정도 이 수업은 미국내 ME 학과 중 스탠포드만의 장점임, 다른 학교는 현실적으로 운영이 어려움 비용이 약 기본 7500 만원 + 해외학교와 계약되는 경우 2~3000 만원 추가 ME 310 (1주일 교육2010:이영호책임) Design thinking 과 doing 을 강조하며, 9개월간 5~10 명의 학생들이 1조가 되어 10여개의 팀으로 수업을 진행. 초기 3개월은 paper bike 라는 과제를 통해 rapid prototyping 의 정신과 기술을 연마하고 나머지 6개월간 협력사가 정해준 주제를 디자인한다. 협력사는 스텐포드 비용 $75,000과 해외연계대학 $50,000 즉 총 $125,000 을 지불하고 9개월간 3회의 정기미팅에 참여할 수 있으며 주 1회 컨퍼런스콜을 실시한다. 2000년 삼성디자인(IDS)스쿨에서 2명이 학생 신분으로 참여한 적이 있다. ME 출신들은 IDEO, Frog, Google 등 세계적인 디자인회사를 설립하는 데 공헌한 바 있다.

- #28: the Design Management Institute: Review. The issue explores the fact that the definitions of “service design” and "experience design" are becoming moving targets. What are the key design disciplines necessary to create more-effective experiences? And what needs to be done in education to create better experience and service designers? You need people with business management, psychology, and social sciences experience alongside designers and developers of all flavors. A key skill that trained designers bring is the ability to make ideas tangible in some form, through diagrams, sketches, and prototypes. That takes the business idea out of the spreadsheet, which is a poor vehicle for understanding human experiences, and turns it into something that people can look at and interact with. Then they can make informed decisions about the concepts. How should business, government, and education evolve to deliver better experiences? Where do you start?
