Design Ethics
A discussion
On behalf of my generation…
Monteiro: All according to plan
• “The world is working exactly
as we designed it to work, and
that’s the problem.
• “We’re here because we’ve
abdicated our responsibility as
gatekeepers.
• “We’re here because we forgot
how much strength we have.
• “It’s time to remember.”
Heller (Steven): “Why did the Fascists &
Nazis have such great design?”
Ethics as Method (not Post-Method):
a Thought Experiment
•If you grew up &
lived in segregated
USA or apartheid
South Africa, what
kind of ‘futuristic’
products, brands or
systems would you
be designing?
Heller (Cheryl): “best method to create a
viable future for our civilization”
Design Ethics: a discussion
Heller: Social vs Traditional Design
Harari: “How do we live knowing that … our next
thought may be the result of an algorithm?”
• “Our society is built on the ideas that the voter
knows best, that the customer is always right,
that ultimate authority is with the feelings of
human beings … which cannot be manipulated.
• “Ultimately, my choices, my desires reflect my
free will and nobody can access that or touch
that. And this was never true. But we didn't pay
a very high cost for believing in this myth in the
19th and 20th century because nobody had a
technology to actually do it.
• “Now, people—some people—corporations,
governments are gaming the technology to
hack human beings. Maybe the most important
fact about living in the 21st century is that we
are now hackable animals.”
Gandhi: Talisman
• “I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in
doubt, or when the self becomes too much with
you, apply the following test.
• “Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest
man [woman] whom you may have seen, and
ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is
going to be of any use to him [her].
• “Will he [she] gain anything by it?
• “Will it restore him [her] to a control over his
[her] own life and destiny?
• “In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom]
for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?
• “Then you will find your doubts and your self
melt away.”
Collapsing false binaries, and
acknowledging that everything is political
Public Personal
Political Private
Lodaya: Idealism = Responsible = Social =
Political
• Benefiting the distressed/vulnerable/powerless –
addressing inequality, injustice, etc.
• Outcome-focused rather than Artefact-focused innovation
• Short-, Medium- and Long-term scenarios & perspectives
• Builds on People’s expertise, preferences and
leadership/inclusion
• Multidisciplinary and Systemic lens
• Exploratory & Adaptive rather than Predetermined/Fixed
roadmap
• Accommodating diverse (and contradicting) views &
opinions
• Non-mainstream approaches to Viability, Scalability and
Replicability
• Creating/strengthening Social Capital
• Strong moral/ethical filters & checkpoints
