Introduction
Therapeutic Activities
• Therapeutic Activities are the tasks that are
functional and dynamic, from daily activities that are
used as a treatment to improve strength and range of
motion.
• Therapeutic activities like this involve functional and
simple tasks that directly imitates real-life activity.
• An example of a Therapeutic activity could be lifting
a weighted object and placing it on the top shelf,
which is mainly to strengthen overhead shoulder
movement.
Art and design as therapeutic activity
Art therapy can be used to treat a wide range of mental disorders and
psychological distress. In many cases, it might be used in conjunction
with other psychotherapy techniques such as group
therapy or cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Some situations in which art therapy might be utilized include:
• Children with learning disabilities
• Adults experiencing severe stress
• Children suffering from behavioral or social problems at school or at
home
• People experiencing mental health problems
• Individuals suffering from a brain injury
• Children or adults who have experienced a traumatic event
• Eating disorders
• Aging-related issues
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Cancer
• Medical conditions
• Family or relationship problems
• Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
ART THERAPY TECHNIQUES AND EXERCISES
Certified therapists will typically have a comprehensive understanding of the powerful effect that
the creative process can have on those in therapy. A therapists often use psychological, spiritual,
and artistic theories in conjunction with clinical techniques to achieve the desired therapeutic
outcome. The approach has proven to be beneficial even for non-verbal individuals and
professional artists. Common techniques used in therapy include:
• Painting
• Finger painting
• Doodling
• Scribbling
• Sculpting
• Drawing
• Using molding clay
• Carving
• Making pottery
• Making cards
• Using textiles
• Making collages
When it’s used?
• Emotional difficulties
• Substance use
• Psychosocial issues
• Stress
• Psychological symptoms associated with other
medical issues
Where will we use this therapy techniques
A therapist may use a variety of art methods including drawing, painting, sculpture,
and collage with clients ranging from young children to the elderly. Clients who have
experienced emotional trauma, physical violence, domestic abuse, anxiety, depression,
and other psychological issues can benefit from expressing themselves creatively.
• Inpatient offices, private mental health offices, schools, and community
organizations are all possible settings where art therapy services may be available.
Some specific setting where art therapy might take place include:
• Hospitals
• Wellness center
• Correctional facilities
• Community centers
• Private therapy offices
• Senior centers
• Women's shelters
• Homeless shelters
• Elementary schools and high schools
• Colleges and universities
• Residential treatment centers
• Group homes
• People often wonder how an art therapy session differs from the average art
class.
• Where an art class is focused on teaching technique or creating a specific
finished product, art therapy is more about letting clients focus on their inner
experience.3
In creating art, people are able to focus on their own perceptions,
imagination, and feelings. Clients are encouraged to create art that expresses
their inner world more than making something that is an expression of the outer
world.
Benefits of Art Therapy
• Improves concentration Concentrating on the subject you’re painting or concentrating on
improving the details in what you’ve already painted builds essential skills in focus.
• Sharpen fine motor skills From broad backgrounds to fine details, practicing painting
improves hand-eye coordination and boosts motor skills. This is helpful in improving fine
activities such as typing and handwriting, but painting can also improve coordination in
broader activities such as participating in sports.
• Good way to relax Painting can be therapeutic because it allows the mind to focus on the
images at hand and on nothing else. This focus toward one central topic relieves stress on the
mind, and in turn relaxes the body. This relaxation minimizes muscle soreness, joint pain,
headaches, and other physical ailments. It has similar effects as meditation.
• Promotes knowledge of various cultures Painting increases your appreciation for visual art
by teaching the variety and difficulties of learning techniques
• Boosts creativity Whether the painting is abstract or realistic, minimalist or chaotic, paintings
are modes of artistic expression.
• Non-verbal communication skills Painting inspires you to communicate your deepest
thoughts and feelings – even those that you may not be able to express verbally – through
your art
• Critical thinking skills – Choosing which brush to use or which paints to mix to create the
exact color you need makes you a more decisive person.
• Improved self confidence – Just as knowing
hard work yields better results, finishing a
painting that you are happy with feels great
and gives you a boost in self-esteem.
Types of Art Therapy for Different
Feelings and Emotions
Emotions:
• Paint or draw your emotions. Here, you want to think about how you are feeling and put that
feeling into paper, however you see it.
Create an emotion wheel. You’ll want to use lots of color for this activity! Label each emotion
with a color that fits for you.
• Design a postcard that you will never send. This activity helps with releasing anger in a way
that never has to be presented to someone else.
• Coloring books for emotions. You can buy, or print, certain coloring pages that were created to
release emotions.
Happiness:
• Make a collage related to a quote that speaks to you. Turn words that mean a lot to you and
turn it into a visual that is inspiring.
• Draw a wild invention. This activity will get your creative juices flowing and will most likely
be wild and funny!
• Draw animals you love. For some people, animals are a source of love and happiness. Draw
the ones that you love the most (your own pet included).
• Draw, color, or paint your idea of the perfect day or perfect home. This activity will help you
create a visual of spaces and things that feel safe and warm to you.
Relaxation
• Paint or color while listening to music. When art and music are paired together, our brains and bodies can
relax.
• Make a mandala. You can either print one off or draw your own – this is a meditative symbol that is
relaxing to look at and work with.
• Draw something very big! Get out the large pieces of paper or a big cardboard box and get your body
moving.
• Choose colors that are relaxing and calming to you and only use those. Sometimes certain colors elicit
different feelings for us. Choose ones that speak to you.
• Draw, paint, or sculpt outdoors. The sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the outdoors, when paired with art,
are very relaxing.
Trauma and Loss
• Create a collage of your worries. Put whatever worries you in your life on paper.
• Turn illness into a masterpiece. If you or someone close to you is ill, turn those feelings into something
meaningful.
• Paint someone you have lost. If you have lost someone close to you, remember him or her and make that
special person close to you again.
• Draw a safe space. You can refer to your safe space when you need a reminder.
