•  Implement a range of online teaching strategies to
engage students in learning
•  Apply skills in the use of learning technologies
•  Build an online learning community
•  Model best practice based in online learning and
teaching, drawing on theoretical frameworks
•  Reflect on the experience of being a student in the
online learning environment
Task
Work together in groups to identify challenges/
strategies in learning & teaching online. Present
your findings.
Lesson 1: Must have careful planning,
structuring & scaffolding
Purpose - the following group work activity is to give you
experience in working in an online group. The activity will be in
four stages:
1.  During Topic 2 you will work in your group to identify
Challenges in Learning & Teaching Online
2.  During Topic 3 you will work in your group to discuss Strategies
for Success in Learning & Teaching Online
3.  During Topic 4 you will finalise your ideas to this group work
activity by developing a Presentation

Synchronous Sessions
Lesson 3: Encourage & Motivate
Group 1: Ann and Mary have kicked off the wiki for group 1, great to
see this starting to take shape with some great suggestions for
challenges!
Group 2: Bob and Sam have created a list of questions to get the
group thinking about the types of challenges they may encounter.
Great start!
Group 3: Great to see Henry testing out the space, looking forward
to reading the other group contributions as they come through.
Group 4: Jane, Theo and James have jumped in and are working out
some times to meet in real time. Well done for taking the initiative
here!
*We strongly encourage those participants who have not connected
in with their groups to do so promptly.
Lesson 4: Demonstrate teacher/
facilitator presence
•  Be present but also step back and allow
participants to take control of their learning
•  Be available when needed
Lesson 5: Let technology help – but
not dictate
•  Which technologies will participants need to be
successful?
•  Technical tools should not create a barrier to the
group, but rather enhance the learner
experience
Tools/resources used:
Book – to outline requirements/embed videos
Wiki – to collaborate and share ideas
Videos – provide instruction/clarification
News forum – to send motivational messages/
provide updates
Synchronous session – to collaborate and share
ideas/provide clarification and for participants to
present
Lesson 6: Experience it yourself
•  Where possible, experience online group work
yourself
•  Take the experience as learning that you can
apply to your own teaching
Lesson 7: Reflect/Self-assess
Have participants reflect on the following:
1.  What did you learn about yourself and your
own level of contribution throughout the
activity?
2.  What did you most enjoy/least enjoy about the
group work activity?
3.  How do you think online group would be
beneficial to students both in their learning
and in engaging with others?
Reflect/Self-Assess
Make it fun!
