Designing Remotely
Prof Lydia B. Chilton
Virtual Campus Design Challenge
4 April 2020
Let me tell you a story
2
3
This is Nadia. She’s 11. She lives in Houston.
4
Nadia is struggling with fractions at school
Her uncle wants to help, but he lives in NYC
5
He uploads them to YouTube
Her uncle tried many ways to help Nadia.
6
CCB+A+
This videos help Nadia. She aces the test!
7
This video helps other students pass their
fractions tests, too.
8
Videos in this format help students learn
other topics.
9
These videos became Khan Academy.
10
Very general problem
11
But it started by helping
a specific person with a specific need
Nadia, age 11 Ace this fractions test
Sounds simple…
What could go wrong?
Some people promise to
solve grand challenges.
These sound great, and get people excited.
But they aren’t actionable.
Specific goals are actionable.
You can start today.
And you can usually
generalize later.
Domain
Online shopping
Specific Need
Uncommon books
Social Networking Harvard students looking
up dorm, classes,
relationship status
Read/send Email No page reload
Never Delete
Generalized to
Clothes,Food,
Amazon Fresh
Other sellers
Ivy League
US Colleges
Everybody

Graphic Design
For novices
High School
Yearbooks
Posters,
facebook flyers,
If you start specific, you can usually generalize.
How should I start?
Pick a general domain you’re interested in
• Education
• Health
• Mental Health
• Jobs
• Volunteering
• Housing
• Social
• Supporting International Students
Do some research. Example: Mental Health.
1. What exists? Google it. 2. Ask people.
Derive an insight to design around.
• Mental health
• “Many people liked taking the survey itself. They weren’t taking stock
of their mental health, and didn’t realize it.”
• How can we help people pay attention to their mental health daily,
and get the help they need?
How can my team design
remotely?
TLDR: Use google docs.
Write down tasks and
assignments In docs
Design in slides
If it’s not written down:
1) You will forgot your ideas
2) You will not communicate well to your team
Stay organized with folders
How do I build our design?
Create a prototype
Prototype a website with Slides
(or a service like Wix / Google sites)
Prototype a website with Slides
(or a service like Wix / Google sites)
Prototype social apps with
Facebook groups
Sal Khan created educational material by
recording himself. And the prototype took off!
24
What do I turn in?
Turn in a video of your prototype in action
• Motivate the problem
• State the problem clearly
• Share your insight
• Share evidence of your insight?
Who did you talk to? What
research did you do?
• Show your prototype in action.
Show the value of your design.
Inspire judges and developers to believe in your idea
This is a design challenge
Not a coding competition
The judges want to understand the idea and how it would be implemented.
Summary
Pick a domain.
Find an insight.
Create a design.
Make a prototype
Test it on a specific user.
Refine the design.
Turn in a video that shows and explains the design.
30
Focus on helping
a specific person with a specific need
