Take down the definition, then raise your hand and answer the question:
Colony: A region under the control of another country and
occupied by settlers from that country.
Ireland was not treated well by the British Empire for many
hundreds of years. Does anyone have any knowledge or ideas
of what they did (1100 – 1800)?
Homework: reflective journal page 82

Objectives:
1. Examine the causes of poverty.
2. Understand the terms colony and colonialism
Heading: Development 3 Date:
 We shall read page 127 – 129 today, taking notes
along the way.
 We’ll watch a short video explaining the idea with
pictures.
 We will examine an infographic on page 83 that uses
a curve instead of bars.
Plan for today Development 3 Date:
 I shall need eight volunteers today to read. Raise hands at
the end of a paragraph. Take notes as we go.
 (note) Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s): a
non-profit, voluntary group that seeks to help people.
 (note) Colonialism: controlling, settling and exploiting
another country.
 (note) Britain, Spain, France and Portugal were the four
largest colonial powers in Europe.
 When you are finished the notes, take a look at the images
on page 128 and 129. What do you see?
