The major arteries in the body develop from the embryonic truncus arteriosus and a series of paired arch arteries. The ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk form from the truncus arteriosus, while the arch of the aorta and its branches develop from the ventral part of the aortic sac and arch arteries. As the arch arteries regress, the descending aorta, brachiocephalic artery, common and internal carotid arteries remain. The pulmonary artery and ductus arteriosus are derived from the sixth arch arteries. Developmental anomalies can occur if there are issues with the regression of the arch arteries or formation of the ductus arteriosus.
