Shape Task
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like that I was able to utilize new tools such as the
pattern overlay tool to make more realistic fur.
This task helped prepare me for rotoscoping task
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to redo my image I would improve the colour
choice of the eyes and create more detailed shapes for
the face, the eyes specifically.
Rotoscope
Rotoscope
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like that I was able to include the smaller shapes for
detail. Creating the image was satisfying as you can see
the final image take shape.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to re-do this I would choose a better colour
pallet in order to create a more realistic final product.
Film Quotes
Film Quotes
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I liked the colour pallet in my first image, I also
liked the use of different text settings.
I also liked the white bars on my second image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to re-do this task I would improve the
blend of the different images, as in image one I
have two images overlapping one another and
one of them is unclear. If I were to re-do the
second image I would edit the text settings to
make them stand out more.
Text Based
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I enjoyed playing with these settings as I learnt
skills in an area of photoshop I am weakest. I
especially enjoyed overlaying an image in the
text and may possibly incorporate this into my
work.
What would you improve if you did it again?
I would keep experimenting with text settings to
see what I could create with more time.
Comic Book
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I liked that I could incorporate a part of the
movie the image is sourced from using colour
overlay. I think the cartoon effect worked well
with the image I chose.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to redo this image I would remove the
colour overlay on the top right side of the image
as it looks out of place. I would also change the
levels so more detail was shown on the faces.
Comic Book
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I think the comic effect worked well on both
images I chose, I like the colour overlay on the
background of the bottom left image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to redo this image I would choose less
layers in the filter gallery of the top right image,
I feel as though there is too much detail from
the original image
Photo Story
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I liked the comic strip layout and the fact I only
used colour in the last frame. I also like the use
of consistent shaped text boxes.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to re-do this task I would change the
layout to make the story easier to follow as I
feel the opening section is slightly muddled. I
would also decrease the levels so teh images
looked more cartoon-like.
Illustration
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I liked the extra freedom illustration gives you as
opposed to PSD’s. I like the block text and
shadowing in the letters of my image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
To improve this image I would make the lines
bolder so they could be seen. I would also
include a background as their is too much white
space.
Narrative Environment
Narrative Environment
Evaluation
What did you like about your image?
I like the cartoon detail of my images, I also like
the bright colours in my first image. I think the
rotoscoping of the bushes in the second image
worked well.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I were to re-do this task I would improve the
rotoscoping of the trees on my second image
and select less layers when choosing my cartoon
filter on the first image as the horizon is
muddled with the sky.

Mood Boards
Characters
This mood board shows the character options I have been considering I
plan on making unrealistic cartoon characters that are almost doodle like,
for example the bottom row of images, especially the middle one.
Setting
My settings will be minimal, I plan to hand drawn my entire book so my final product will look
similar to the image in the top right. I have included other images to display the cartoon aspect
of my drawings, for example the bottom middle image is very simple and exaggerated
Page style
My pages will be heavily influenced by Dr Seuss. They will be hand drawn and
include little variety in colour. I will include both cut out illustrations, top left, and
full page spreads, top right.
Proposal
Dimensions
8 pages – A4 Landscape
Story Overview
An eagle egg falls from a tree into a duck nest that was below, the eagle is born into
the family of ducks and is confused as to why he is different. The other ducks bully him
because of this. When he grows up he finds that he is better than the ducklings at
many things and the ducks apologise for bullying him, and they all lived happily ever
after.
Export Format
PDF & JPEG
Advantages: PDF’s are better quality than JPEG’s
Disadvantages: PDF’s can only be loaded into Adobe software whereas JPEG’s can be
loaded into most software's. PDF file sizes are larger than JPEG’s.
Deadline
15/6/2016
Audience
My book will be universally accessible making it the demographic of ABC1 parents. I
plan on having a colourful cover so it will appeal to Children and parents. The book
will appeal to 4-8 year olds of both genders and 27-45 year old young parents.
Production Methods
I plan on adding my own drawn Cartoon characters. I think this is the best approach as it is all original
content and it will be detailed. I plan on filling a full page with cut out white boxes for text. I plan on my
style being unrealistic cartoon. I will hand draw my subjects and scan them onto my computer, I will then
use photoshop to colourise them. Much like the children's book “stick man” I plan on changing
between cut out images and full page images. I will mix between the top left and bottom left
images. My font will be consistent throughout and also change between cut outs and on the
illustration. I like the use of white space in the picture on the middle-right, this may be something I
incorporate into my children’s book.
What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
The mood board shows a clear visual style for the
book, and gives you a good general outline for the
book. As well as the story overview gives a great
outline of the story which is easy to interpret.
Maybe talk more in depth about production
methods you will use in photoshop.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
The idea generation outlines a variation of
techniques and content to create a good children's
book.
You could relate your visual style to an existing
children's book. Or maybe go into more depth on
the setting of the story.
What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
Proposal is clear. I can understand the story and
have an idea about how you will make it.
Not entirely sure what it will look like at this stage.
There could perhaps be more detail in this part of
your work.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
One idea explored quite well in your mind map.
Quite a few images on your mood board which give
us an indication on the style you will use.
Mind map could have explored a greater range of
ideas. Mood board could have more detail, looking
at locations and character in depth.
Feedback Summary
Sum up your feedback.
My feedback overall is positive, although I need to improve the depth in which I talk
about the visual style of my book.
Which parts of your feedback do you agree with and why?
I agree with the point made about the improved depth in my mind map. I think this is a
good point as I felt it was too short.
Which parts of your feedback do you disagree with and why?
I disagree with the point made about referencing an already existing product as I feel I
did that in the mood board.
Original Script
When the tale begins, a mother duck's eggs hatch. One of the little birds is perceived by the other birds
and animals on the farm as a homely little creature and suffers much verbal and physical abuse from
them. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter
the flocks. He finds a home with an old woman, but her cat and hen tease him mercilessly and again he
sets off on his own.
The duckling sees a flock of migrating wild swans. He is delighted and excited, but he cannot join them,
for he is too young and cannot fly. Winter arrives. A farmer finds and carries the freezing little duckling
home, but the foundling is frightened by the farmer’s noisy children and flees the house. He spends a
miserable winter alone in the outdoors, mostly hiding in a cave on the lake that partly freezes over.
When spring arrives a flock of swans descends on the now thawing lake.
The ugly duckling, now having fully grown and matured, unable to endure a life of solitude and hardship
any more and decides to throw himself at the flock of swans deciding that it is better to be killed by such
beautiful birds than to live a life of ugliness and misery. He is shocked when the swans welcome and
accept him, only to realize by looking at his reflection in the water that he has grown into one of them.
The flock takes to the air, and the ugly duckling spreads his beautiful large wings and takes flight with
the rest of his new family.

Draft Script
It was a windy night in Animal wood. Branches and leaves were falling from every tree.
The storm cleared and it was hatching time in animal wood and no one was more excited than the birds in Bird Tree. Swallows, magpies, ducks,
eagles, crows, robins, pigeons and every bird you can think of lived in Bird tree.
All the eggs in Bird tree began to hatch.
“Oh no!” Mama Duck screamed as she saw one of her little eggs hatch.
“You’re no good, you have to leave my nest now!” she said to the small strange coloured duckling in her nest.
It was then that the other ducklings started to pick on him. They shouted “ugly” and “ew” at him until he couldn’t take it anymore and he jumped out
of the nest and onto the ground and ran away into animal wood.
Animal wood was huge to the little duckling. He kept walking and walking for days.
The duckling had been walking for a very long time he had started to grow long brown and white feathers.
“Psst” heard the duckling. “You look cold would you like to come into my treehouse?” It was then a small friendly squirrel emerged from the bush.
“Thank you for letting me stay in your treehouse” said the duckling. “No problem, what’s your name?” said the squirrel.
“I don’t have a name! I’m a duckling that ran away from the nest because the other ducklings were mean!” said the duckling.
“A duckling!?...I have a friend at the top of the tree that I’d like you to meet in the morning!”.
The next morning the friendly squirrel and the duckling travelled all the way to the top of the tree.
At the top of the tree were an entire family of eagles.
“Hello?” said the duckling. “My friend the squirrel said you would be able to help me, I’m a duckling who ran away from the nest because all the
other ducklings called me ugly”.
“A duckling?!” the Eagle scoffed. “Boy, you are no duckling, you are an eagle!”
“An Eagle!?” he shouted. “Wow! That must be why i look different!”
“Don’t worry young boy, you can live with us!” remarked the eagle as he hugged him close.

The storm cleared and it was hatching time in Animal Wood and no one was more excited than the birds in Bird Tree. Swallows, magpies, ducks, eagles, crows,
robins, pigeons and every bird you can think of lived in Bird tree.
But the most beautiful of all was Mama Duck. Mama duck was known to have the most beautiful eggs and the most beautiful ducklings in all of Animal Wood.

Animal Wood was huge to the little duckling. He kept walking and walking for days.
The duckling had been walking for a very long time he had started to grow long brown and white feathers. During the daytime Animal Wood was a friendly place,
full of all different kinds of animals that would smile and say hello. But at nighttime it was cold and scary.
The duckling was scared of nighttime so he hid behind a bush.

“Psst” heard the duckling. “You look cold. Would you like to come into my treehouse?” It was then a small friendly squirrel emerged from the bush. The duckling
decided he didn't like nighttime in Animal Wood and went with the friendly squirrel.
“Thank you for letting me stay in your treehouse” said the duckling. “No problem, what’s your name?” said the squirrel.
“I don’t have a name. I’m a duckling that ran away from the nest because the other ducklings were mean!” said the duckling.

“An eagle?” he shouted. “Wow! That must be why I look different”
“Don’t worry young boy, We’ll take you to find your family at Bird Tree!” said Mr. Eagle.
“Thank you so much Mr. Eagle!” said The young eagle as he jumped with joy.
The young eagle was reunited with its family, he met his brothers and sisters and Papa Eagle and Mama Eagle.
“I’m so happy to meet you” said the young eagle.
“Thank goodness. We were very worried when one of our eggs went missing after the storm!” chirped Mama Eagle.
“We asked everyone in Bird Tree and no one could find you. Were very happy to have you back” Said Papa Eagle.
The end.

At the top of the tree were an entire family of eagles. “Hello?” said the duckling. “My friend the squirrel said you would be able to help me, I’m a duckling who ran away from the nest because all the other ducklings called me ugly”. “A duckling?!” the Eagle scoffed. “Boy, you are no duckling, you are an eagle!” “An Eagle!?” he shouted. “Wow! That must be why i look different!” “Don’t worry young boy, you can live with us!” remarked the eagle as he hugged him close.
