The EPA conducted an inspection of MIT in 1998 and found numerous violations of environmental regulations. As a result, MIT entered into a consent decree requiring it to develop an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Management System. The EHS Management System establishes organizational structure, roles and responsibilities, training programs, inspection procedures, and other elements to ensure compliance and continual improvement of EHS practices. MIT launched the system between 2001-2005 through new policies, training programs, inspections, and other processes overseen by an EHS director and committee.
