Difference between batch ,PFR & MFR(CSTR)
Batch Reactor
In the batch reactor, or BR the reactants are initially charged into a
container, are well mixed, and are left to react for a certain period. The
resultant mixture is then discharged. This is an unsteady-state
operation where composition changes with time
Plug flow reactor
• In the PFR thr flow of fluid through the reactor is orderly with no
element of fluid overtaking or mixing with any other element ahead
or behind. Actually, there may be lateral mixing of fluid in a plug flow
reactor
Mixed flow reactor (CSTR)
• ideal steady-state flow reactor is called the mixed reactor, the
backmix reactor, the ideal stirred tank reactor. , it is a reactor in which
the contents are well stirred and uniform throughout. Thus, the exit
stream from this reactor has the same composition as the fluid within
the reactor
Continuous and non continous
Steady or un steady
Steady state reactor
both the plug flow and mixed flow reactor are steady state reactor
Unsteady state reactor
batch reactor is a unsteady state reactor because it depends upon time
Agitated
• MFRs and batch reactor usually are equipped with an agitating device
(stirrer, agitator) for mixing the reactants but in case of
PFRs mixing takes place pependicular to the direction of
flow of reactants and they do not have any agitating device
as such.
Composition
• in a PFR composition varies along the length of the reactor
whereas in a MFR composition of the reactant mixture is
uniform throughout the reactor and same as that in the exit
line.
Concentration
• in a MFR the concentration of the
reactant drops to a low value at a time whereas for PFR the
concentration of the reactant decreases progressively (i.e
stepwise)and higher conversions can be obtained than MFR for
a given reaction.
Performance equation or design equation
ApplicationBatchreactor
• used in the
process industry
• laboratory
applications
• fermentation for
beverage
• medical
production
Plugflowreactor
• Large-scale
production
• Continuous
production
• Fast reactions
• High-
temperature
reactions
MFR(CSTR)
• waste water
treatment
processes.
• facilitate rapid
dilution
• both high pH and
low pH volatile
fatty acid wastes
Note
• CSTRs are less efficient compared to other types of reactors as they
require larger reactor volumes to achieve the same reaction rate as
other reactor models such as Plug Flow Reactors.
