Digipak Questionnaire Analysis
- 2. The following analysis is based on the two digipak designs on the next slide. These results will help me when creating my digipak. This is because within the music industry, artists need to work towards the needs of their audience, if their content differs from what their audience expect, it can have a negative effect and thus prevent the artist from making money. By adhering to the opinions of the people from this questionnaire, I will be making sure that my digipak is if the correct requirements for my audience. However, the research into the audience, genre conventions of Indie music and the band themselves may mean that the research collated will need to be different from the final product that I create. This is because the people in this questionnaire do not represent enough of the audience for Sundara Karma in order to produce an accurate digipak that caters for their audience’s needs. - 4. { Sundara Karma’s typical target audience are people in the late teens and early twenties age bracket. This survey is therefore useful as nearly everyone who has answered the survey are between these ages. This will allow the collected data to be accurate of the correct audience’s needs, which complies with the supply and demand necessity of the music industry. Please state your age.
- 5. { There is a gender imbalance in the survey, however, the music created by Sundara Karma isn’t limited to a specific gender. Therefore, this imbalance will not have a negative affect on my research. Please state your gender.
- 6. { Overall, people have preferred the first digipak. This shows that people like the symbolism behind the design of the first image as well as the layout and colouring of the design, therefore when creating my digipak, I will follow the similar structures that are set out in this design. Which front cover design do you prefer?
- 7. { More people thought that the first digipak suited the song better than the second digipak design. However, with indie digipaks, the colour scheme tends to remain within the choices of black, white and/or red. The first digipak manipulates a lot of colour to convey different messages, and whilst this might be a more visually appealing design, this adheres more to the genre of R&B as opposed to Indie. I will therefore make sure to incorporate design elements of both designs in order to fit the audience’s preferences as well as adhere to typical Indie genre conventions. - 8. { More people prefer colour as opposed to monochrome. This refers again to the point made on the previous slide being that Indie genre conventions call for limited colouring and simplistic designs. On the other hand, the song is about youth, and a common youth stereotype is rebellion, therefore having a design that goes against the genre conventions of Indie music could be effective in conveying this message of rebellion and individualism. - 9. { More people prefer simplistic designs over complex designs. This complies with the Indie genre. This, however, contrasts the previous opinion of the first design being the favourite, as it is a complex design. This further highlights that the audience like elements of both designs, showing how it would be best to include elements of both in my design. Which design type do you prefer for the front cover?
- 10. { More people preferred simplistic fonts as opposed to dynamic fonts. This is useful as most Indie band front covers have simplistic fonts and layouts of the texts on the cover. This will also allow the band name and song to be prominent figures on the covers, which will make both texts more memorable. Which font type do you prefer for the front cover?
- 11. { Everyone liked symbolism in the front cover. This is very useful as I have clear direction to ensure that’s symbolism is prominent in the cover. With youth, there is a lot of ingrained symbolism opportunities too. Do you like front covers to contain symbolism?
- 12. { More people like matching themes. Most digipaks do not match the themes of their music videos, however, the audience for this questionnaire have preferred the continuity having the themes between the two match. Most Indie front covers and music videos do match however as they’re mostly in Black and White. Do you think that the themes of the digipak should match the themes of the music video?
- 13. { There was slight preference to have the included on the front cover. Indie as a genre is, unlike Pop for example, not a widely known genre, therefore I also agree that having the name of the band be a prominent feature on the cover would be good as the audience will be able to identify the band. Do you think that the band's name needs to be a prominent feature?
- 14. { The top three choices were song details, a band message and a thanks message. These three would be beneficial as the messages would make the band more personable to their fans as opposed to having a huge gap between artist and audience. The song details would allow the audience to see the work that went into the creation of the song. Which additional items do you think are essential to include?

- 16. { The most popular design was the second. Seeing as I will only have one CD the design will have the it in the middle as opposed on the right. I also like this design as it is simplistic to not overload the audience with design features but also has enough space to include enough additional elements. It also places the CD in the middle, which is good as it ensures that the CD is the main focus. Which net layout do you prefer?
